Waze - Sound over bluetooth?

For those of you that use Waze, is there a way to hear the directions through the car? When I use it, I have to shut off my bluetooth, and I get the directions from the speaker on my Android phone. I'm guessing there is no way to have it interrupt the music that is playing like it does with the built in Nav, or some other option?

It will do what you are expecting only if you are in bluetooth music mode. Not on radio, Entune apps (pandora,iheart,etc..) nor Nav.

From personal experience, Waze app only interrupts music that's on the phone or Pandora (app I use to stream). My phone also has to be plugged in via USB in order to interrupt the music. It may work in bluetooth mode however I don't play music that way. I don't recall Waze interrupting the radio. I have an iPhone 6S BTW.

The only time that I can get the Waze or Google Maps to interrupt the music is if I'm using the built-in I heart radio or Pandora apps. You also need to have ways set to not play audio through your phone speaker. If my phone is streaming Spotify over the Bluetooth option, then it interrupted as well. If I'm using XM or USB storage, it will not interrupt the music with directions.

The whole process got so annoying for me that I stopped using the Bluetooth connection for Waze or Google Maps. Both applications play audio through my phone's speaker. I do have an S7, so the speaker is pretty good. I also use a RAM x-grip suction cup mount by the a-pillar on the driver side of the windshield.

Toyota definitely needs to step up their radio game. The entire radio is at least five removed from what I would call industry standards.

I've never used Waze, but I do use google maps. If I am listening to a podcast (through Podcruncher) or streaming Pandora, google maps will interrupt. The phone must be connected via bluetooth and then google maps started. There's something messed up w/ the sequencing there.

My biggest annoyance w/ the bluetooth is it locking up. Also, the instance my phone connects, the head unit immediately begins playing my music. I absolutely hate that!!! I almost never listen to music in the car. Plus, some of my music is not child friendly and this is the kid wagon a few days per week. I wish I knew how to make the default to "wait for me to choose".

Settings > Sound & Voice> (Go all the way to the bottom) Sound output> Select play as bluetooth Phone call

That’s my menu and audio settings screenshot.

Here is a screenshot from my Samsung Galaxy S7. I don't have the same options as the above screenshot. I think that is an iPhone screenshot.

I haven't tried it myself as my Kenwood deck is not a bluetooth deck.

My drift car ironically has bluetooth but it's in the body shop so I cannot test it anytime soon...

When you selected this option (maybe iPhone only) does Waze play over XM, USB or standard radio?

I have an iPhone and it will play Waze audio through the stereo by muting whatever else is coming through the speakers. I have Sound Output set to Play as Bluetooth phone call.

I also have an iPhone 7, for my work phone. I'm going to try using Waze on that device with the setting in the screenshot.

It will be interesting to see if it plays over the music on my radio or not. I should be able to test it in the next hour or so and respond back.

For reference, normally I do not use my iPhone for navigation. I almost always use my Samsung S7.

I like Waze for traffic and police information. Not so much for directions. I find the built in NAV is very usable WITH Waze as well. Sometimes their routes are different though.

Waze uses a very different routing process then the built-in head unit or any stand-alone GPS. Ways is optimized to take a route that will save you seconds or minutes with every turn. This in turn translates to the fastest possible time to you location.

Traditional head units, Garmin and even Google Maps do not use that aggressive of routing algorithm.

Each application really serves its own purpose. One cannot compare one to another. While they are all GPS applications they do function very differently.

I took a drive with the above screenshot enabled.

The behavior was something I had never seen before when using my Android phone. The phone appeared to make a call into the radio every time directions were played. The screen was definitely busy when it came to the turn by turn directions. It was flipping between my XM radio and the ways audio.

It is not nearly as seamless as the audio simply being muted and spoken.

I hope the attached video actually works. It's a good representation of what my iPhone was doing.

The real question is, can I make my Android based Samsung S7 do the same thing?
