My first thought is to say no but my mechanic friends races Jeeps in PA on the weekends so I'll have to let them in. :bigok:

Maybe someday I'll get to restore a FJ 40...but I also want a 66 Caddy convt & a 67 gto & a 70 Buick GS. I need to hit lotto. LOL

Dig your style. My dream list include a 1959 Impala convertible, 1962 Cadillac Eldorado convertible and a 1969 Dodge Charger. I also need to hit the lotto!

I find this interesting so I looked for an available space in my area. There's one in my area (California Bay Area) in San Mateo, 27 miles away from me. They want $45/hour. The guy that runs the place says he will help which is cool, but who knows how good he is. There's also tools there you can use, but again, what if he's lacking a critical tool you need.

That seems pretty steep to me. For that price, you may as well just pay a shop to do it that charges around $100/hour and not have to spend the time wrenching. Another concern is what happens if you run into a snag and can't get your rig running or back together. I guess you'd then be forced to tow it out of there or continue to pay by the hour during their hours of operation.

I feel for people who like to do their own wrenching but don't have the space to do it in. Definitely one of the downsides to apartment living.

That is why you get your own lift in your garage.

10F 3IN ceiling only garage here, got a low ceiling lift (9FT 3IN) for 2800$ canadian delivered/installed/tax included, worth around 2000$ american. Can get the truck high enough to work on it comfortably.

Cost just a bit more than the quickjacks (2400$ canadian) I had bought before that lift only 18 inches.

I really like this idea and would love to have people over to use the garage - it would be fun helping out on the projects. Considered it but got concerned over insurance (damage to building, equipment and folks hurting themselves) and tools walking off. I think the places that do this commercially have trained techs on site all the time that monitor the activity - probably the only way you could ever get insurance and I bet it would be expensive. You would need to have people sign a release but that wouldn't keep them from suing you. Unfortunately, the lawyers have screwed up everything......

Sadly, crappy people are the ones that screw things up for everyone else requiring lawyers to find a way to protect us from the crappy people. Then there are crappy people who are lawyers - it's a vicious cycle LOL

I can definitely imagine a scenario here where customer X is deep into a job and garage-owner Y is missing the exact socket or tool needed to complete.

You have a really hairy situation at that point. With two complete strangers, the odds are slim that garage owner will help out until resolution unless they're really nice car-guy types, which is likely the only type that would rent out garage space but you never know.

great concerns, when my garage & property are done I'll be renting it out to DIY's also. It will help with the mortgage & property tax.

You're definitely gonna want insurance on that. Lawsuit waiting to happen, especially with the full vehicle lifts you mentioned.

That or at least a super in-depth full disclaimer document written up by a lawyer, notarized, etc.

If I had a garage to share. I would prioritize
Circle of trust.
family and some friends = access level 1= total access.
Some family and friends = level 2=trust but verify
Some friends and acquaintances = level 3=sign waiver and keep an eye on.
Some people =( like to help but don't know) so they will need a level one member to vouch for them and be there with them +level 3 protocols
The rest of them= gut feeling about the person and level 3 protocols plus a (just in case shit happens ) deposit.
Others = bad feeling= No access.
I would put it up For all to see no exceptions.
And then a level One member sues and its All Over
