weird noise from transmission

ok so i have a 1997 4runner 4x4 factory locker

so about a a month or 2 ago my wife said she herd a weird rattling kinda like loose change or a chain noise near the shifter.
It took me over a week to be able to actually hear it. The noise would only be heard under very very light acceleration or once you are at speed with very light throttle.

fast forward 1 month i figured that my shifter was super sloppy and needed bushings. went to toyota bought all 4 new bushings and now the shifter feels new. but the rattling is still there.

i didnt hear it for the first few days after the new bushing install. now i hear it all the time under light load/ acceleration. Its not a bad cat cause i just gutted it. went under the truck and all shifter rod is solid no looseness on it.

i will try to get a small vid/sound clip of it. i am very worried cause in my subaru wrx had a similar noise but it was the center diff going out

Have you checked underneath for any loose parts like muffler pipe covers, skidpans or maybe the tc dampner (the odd part behind the tc)? :cowboy:

There's a good chance it's the emergency brake cable rattling inside it's housing. Take off the trim piece that fits around the e-brake lever, break free the two small nuts on the threaded rod of the brake cable, and tighten the lower nut a little to snug up the cable. Now take it for a test drive and see if the sound is still there.

yes i actually went to the shop last night got under it and nothing is loose that we can see nor feel. im missing my front skid plates

i think it might be my rear drive shaft it clicks lightly when going about 1-2 mph then gets louder. but we looked at all the joints when we had it out last week and they all look great with no play..... so i am lost

guess ill try to see if i can swap it out. but it still dont feel right
