What can I plug into a 4Runner?

Hi, a newbie question: I have the 2014 Trail with the option to switch between 12v and 120v. I'm going to install a backup battery system using an Odyssey PC1200MJT battery as a backup. At that point, what can I plug in terms of hot water boilers, electric cookers, hot plates, Vitamix blenders, Juicers etc?

What's the rule of thumb here?

Look at your owners manual and see what amperage it can support. Then you can pretty much plug in any electrical device that uses that amperage or less. Every electrical device has a sticker or an imprint of the amps that it draws and other electrical data about that item.

Right, both the 12VDC and 120VAC outlets have a max amount of current (AMPS) then can handle.
If the outlets aren't marked look at the owners manual.
Things like your hot water boilers, electric cookers, hot plates, etc draw a lot of current.
What each item uses will be marked on it.

You can find the info in your owner's manual by searching for "Power Outlet" in the index.

The limit isn't based on amps, but watts. The manual says the maximum capacity is 115 volts and 100 watts. No way will it support the appliances you want it to. Heck, I tripped the fuse on my 115v outlet just trying to run a small compressor to pump up a tire. Had to use a smaller compressor that plugged into the 12 volt outlet instead.

You will need to buy a power inverter to get the kind of juice you're talking about. Sorry, I can't help much here (don't know much about them); but I'm sure someone else on this board can. To get started, try searching e-Bay for "auto inverter" or something similar. You'll see a bunch that just go to 100 watts, but there are others listed at 1000w-1200w.

Dunno how your 2014, but on my 2012, I can run 100w constantly on the 120v anytime, and 400w while in park. Waaaaay to low for kitchen appliances I'm afraid.

If it's anything more powerful than a phone or laptop charger, it'll blow the fuses. You know those commercials where the handy soccer mom inflates her douchy kid's soccer ball with one of those electric compressors that would take 20 minutes to put 5 psi into a 33" tire? That's what Toyota's designers had in mind. The power outlets weren't designed for tailgating or power tools. This isn't a work truck.

Thanks for the responses. I was also wondering what happens when I connect the dual battery system since it's not covered in the manual. I'm getting an Odyssey MPLC 120.

I tried running my shop vac from the power outlet in the back.

No go.

Hell, the USB port won't even charge my iPhone, I have to use the cigarette lighter--even then it's not as fast as a wall charger.
