What do you stow your gear in?

I have a few recovery straps, rachet straps, bungies, and the typical roadside emergency equipment. I thought about building a low profile drawer to organize my stuff, but the drawer may be too intrusive in my cargo area eith the numerous large items I lug around at time. A portable box/bag/kit would suit me best.

Do you think a standard ABS plastic Tool Box locked to the roof rack would suit my needs ok or some other means?

Not a bad idea.

My dilemma is, I need a more compact unit. That is easily movable. I haul different items and want to keep the kit in the truck, but it would need to me moved from one position to another based on the cargo.

I bought a Thule trunk organizer. I think it's about 16"x24" or something like that with a couple separators in it and a handle. Keeps all my crap together.

I just thrown my stuff in a 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot (or anywhere for that matter), fasten the lid and strap it in place in my cargo area. It isn't fancy, but it works. It is easily removed, easily doubled in size (add a second bucket for more storage) and in the event of an emergency can be used to carry water.

Who makes the panel and MOLLE pouches for your duty gear in the first pic?

I custom mounted the panel to hang the MOLLE pouches in my 4Runner. Some of the pouches are made by smittybilt.

If you are looking for a storage bin I know that Plano makes one that is relatively cheap ($25) and would work pretty good. I am either going to buy one of those or use a rubbermaid container to put my stuff in.

I just use a Husky canvas tool bag and attach it to one of the rings on the back seat so it doesnt slide around. Its cheap and does what I need it to and can be moved around without any fuss.

There's some sweet setups in this thread. Mine is pretty basic in comparison.

I use a heavy-duty cargo net bag that I snagged from my sister's Astro Van. The loops on the bag just happen to fit perfectly between the headrests & the wheel-well tie-downs.

For dedicated recovery stuff (hi-lift accys, tree strap, gloves, chain) I have a storage box that I got from Bass Pro. Built like a metal ammo can, but bright orange. If the hi-lift goes on the rack, that goes in the back of the runner. I built a drawer to fit other everyday items that fits behind the rear passenger seat so I can still camp out if necessary.

Just posting a quick pic of my setup.

1) Fairly standard first aid kit with the addition of quikclot and an Israeli bandage. Highly recommended.

2) Dedicated tool kit for the truck. I finally broke down and bought a near complete set, including Torx.

3) Black case: recovery and emergency equipment including mre's and water. The case is airtight.

The other stuff is left from a weekend trip.

I had one of the hard plastic "truck boxes" from home depot and it worked great but took up too much of the cargo area. I recently picked up a "military" duffle bag that fits everything. I got the 21x36 and its just big enough.

in it is my:
12v air compressor
decent sized first aid kit
shackles/recovery strap/tie downs
space blanket
rubber mallet
small 75ish piece tool set
homemade block to place under the stock jack (2 4x4s cut to size and glued together)
emergency roadside kit
floor pump for my bike
a small 30" utility shovel
and a few other odds and ends

This bag can be slid to the side and takes up half the space as the box.

i am in the final stages of my cargo drawer for the left side of the truck and i already have a cargo box on the right side.
