What is Hanging Off My 4Runner?!?

I went off roading today, and afterwards I checked under the truck to make sure everything was fine. I didn't bottom out once, and never have for that matter, but I noticed this tube type thing hanging down from around the transmission. I can't tell the source of it, but I have no idea what it is. I haven't looked under the truck for a while, so I don't know long it's been there. It seems like there is oil on the end of some kind. Thoughts? Is this bad?

Some sort of vacuum line? Is that tape on the end or a shredded sheath?

Try to find the other end, we can help you figure out where it should run to. I'm at work so I can't go look under mine.

e-brake cable maybe? Are you one of those auto trans guys who never uses it?

If it is, you'll never find the other end because it probably broke at the handle.

I have an auto and use it everytime. Helps shift out of park without the pressure on the tranny. But man would I loooooove to convert to a manual. Envy.

I have a manual. I took it to jiffy lube to see what those guys thought it might be, and they were pretty sure it was a breather for the transmission. Therefore they said there's nothing to worry about because it is never connected to anything anyway. Do you guys agree with that?

I have a 5-speed and I recently did my clutch. I don't remember anything like that. The front diff has a breather tube, but the TC, 5-speed trans, and rear diffs have their breather on top of the cases just screwed in, no tube. For the trans, it's by the shift lever.

Of course, you never know about some mod crazy off-road river crossing fanatic or mud loving lunatic might decide to do. Know anyone like that?

In that case, I'm going with breather extension mod by PO--obviously not very well done. See if there is something similar on the rear diff--anybody in their right mind would do one there first.
