What is this cubby next to the cupholder for?

Hello T4F'ers,

I am happy to have taken delivery of my 2019 TRD Off Road. Coming from a 4th Gen SR5, I am still getting used to the little nooks and crannies of the cockpit area.

I can't figure out what the heck this little cubby is just below the cupholder and to the left of the shift lever. The size and shape is odd and almost looks like it was made for a specific purpose. It's rectangular but with rounded arches on either side. Definitely not a coin holder or cell phone stand. Does anyone have any idea?

Yup. I figured it was for that purpose as well, for those living in the states that have toll roads everywhere.

It extends the length of the console on the SR5 (and probably Limited?) because the 4X4 dial takes less place than the traditional transfer case shifter. I always assumed it was for pens? There's a slot inside the center console for coins.

It looks like you could fit a stick of chapstick there. Keep those lips moist on the trail.

It's to make you think you have all this awesome storage but you don't. The Limited has leather seating with heated and cooled seats which uses a different center piece. Toyota has to put something there so you get a "cubby."

OK that image of the Limited console makes sense in comparison. Because of the 4WD shift knob, they basically cut that cubby in half for the TRD. I can see the full size cubby holding pens and other items that size. The half cubby is oddly useless but I guess I'll find something to put in there. I was hoping the raised rounded sides had some cool function but maybe I'm just giving the designers too much credit. :becky:

I misread and thought you were taking about the cubby below the HVAC controls.

Did you just screw it into the plastic, or did you take it out and put bolts underneath for reinforcement?

Anyone know how much room is under that? I wonder if you could dremel out a slot and use it as a phone holder slot? I currently use the long cut out along the other cup holder, but that makes using the cup holder useless unless I have the phone vertical.
