What needs immediate attention?

Just purchased a one owner 99 SR5 V6 Auto with 132000KM (82K miles) for 8300cdn (~8000usd), I'm in Canada. Did I pay too much for it?

Anyways, I would like to find out which critical components I should have inspected and serviced before driving it. I plan to keep it until it dies. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Read a bunch on these forums, as well as places like yotatech.com. You'll find the common issues for 4runners and how to address them.

If it was my truck, this is what I'd do: change all the fluids - oil, transmission fluid, differentials and transfer case. Check/change the spark plugs. Check the breather on the rear diff. Check the rear axles seals for leaks. Change the PCV valve. Inspect the front axle boots for tears or punctures. Change the air filter. Adjust the e-brake. Check the brake pads.

If the timing belt has not been changed, you'll want to change that and the water pump soon. Before you hit 100K miles preferably. Inspect the other belts for wear or fraying.


The main pro-active aftermarket upgrade item you can do is getting rid of the factory transmission cooler and avoiding the "strawberry milkshake". It's all over the forums, and popped up recently even. If you do that, and keep the fluids changed....it should run forever. Might not ever die.

Thanks for the quicksilvr. I will probably follow your suggestion, if not more. Easier to keep track of maintanence if everything is done now.

Just pick up the 4runner tonight. Notice something odd. Idle at 700rpm in neutral, in drive goes down to 600rpm. When I stop at a light, rpm goes up to 700 then back down to 600. A few times when I take off from stop, I notice the engine feels faintly like it wants to stall with a little shake. Any thoughts? Hopefully this will go away after I service/replace everything.

more than likely this is the plugs... very typical... like he said... ALL fluids. oil front and rear diff t-case coolant trans and if u can why not do p/s and brake fluid... plugs and pcv valve. check rear axle seals tcase input/ trans output seal... get all u joints greased air filter t-belt water pump all drive belts and assoc. bearings... check for any leaks... valve cover gaskets, rear main, front crank... just do absolutley anything they recommend at the dealership to begin with than anything after that is all doen hill... just as a preventative maintanence thing, have mass air flow sensor cleaned and have it checked for any history codes... just cover all ur bases man and it will all be good from there.

Cleaning the MAF can help the idle thing. It's easy to DIY and cleaning the throttle body and IAC will help the idle too. Search Yotatech for write ups on how.
