so in the last 4 months i had to resurface my rotors twice. i changed my brakes pads to stoptech because it said it works in high temps. and i didnt know i had to change my rotors at that time but the shop said they got me really good bostch rotors for the front.
whatever rotors they gave me i had to resurface twice. is it my brake pads?
im using stock brake lines.

what brake pads, rotors and brake lines do you guys have? or recommend?

I've yet to change either on my 4Runner but I've been pretty happy with the OEM. I plan on sticking with OEM unless the price is astronomical compared to aftermarket. I put Napa Ultra Premium pads and rotors on my wife's jeep about 6 months ago and they've been great so far. Completely quiet and very little brake dust.

OEM pads and rotors. When I bought the truck, it had ceramic pads on it which were so hard that they were wearing out the stock rotors. Sounds like yours are doing the same. I switched to OEM pads and turned the rotors and have been fine ever since (Been like 75K miles on the front brakes).

I'm looking at upgrading to EBC drilled & slotted rotors with Greenstuff pads next though.

I went with DBA slotted rotors and Hawk LTS brake pads. I also have SS brake lines, but I doubt they help performance all that much. My braking power is SICK and there's no fade whatsoever here in the hills and mountains of Colorado. I believe the entire setup for the front cost around $350. I've had it for probably 4 years and have had zero problems since.

I'm sure there's plenty of debate on the subject, but I wanted to shy away from drilled rotors. I bought into the argument that drilling reduces surface area and structural integrity, and are really only a benefit on the track.

I'm using EBC Sport Slotted (NOT drilled) rotors with EBC green stuff pads. One or more of my OEM rotors were warped so I found a deal (I think $250?) on the EBC stuff and replaced all four corners.

They work well and look nicer than OEM but that's about it, I didn't test before/after stopping distances or anything but they feel good to me.

I was told by a buddy who works for a Toyota dealer that you shouldn't use aftermarket pads on an OEM rotor since the OEM pads are organic pads on newer Toyotas. Whereas some aftermarket pads are to hard on the rotors causing extra wear and a lot of heat causing the rotors to run out of round. Had this happen in my 05 Rolla got the pads replace by some jobbers parts while getting snow tires less than 5 months later I had it in at Toyota to have the front rotors turned since the it was like the steering wheel was having a seziure in my hand LoL

This is odd.

Let me preface that I don't have personal experience on this yet. I did just replace my pads with ceramic ones. At this point 2k later, no problems...

That said. In general, the whole reason for going ceramic is for a couple of reasons. 1. They don't generate heat like a metallic pad. 2. The diffuse heat that is created better. 3. Are not a rough on rotors.

I may be wrong and in this case, ceramic may in fact be killing OEM rotors, but that just strikes me odd. It isn't that Ceramic are "harder" and that somehow kills rotors... they do wear better, sure, but they tend to actually be "easier" on the rotors.

Anyway. Who knows. If in 5k miles, my rotors start warping and my steering wheel turns into a seizure, I will let everyone know.

You're friends an idiot. I've been using aftermarket pads on OEM rotors (Toyota, Nissa, GM...etc...etc) for over 40 years. Never ever ever had a problem. Toyota uses some special steel??? Oh Please.... Steel is Steel. the major difference in good quality rotors and cheap rotors is the thickness.

That doesn't prove it's the pads...more like a poor installation. Some of these fly-by-night mechanics never take the time to clean and re-grease the pins the rotors slide on...nor do they grease the clips that hold the pads in place. They just remove the pads and slap on the new ones. Doesn't matter what manufacturer...you replace pads that way....5 months is LUCKY.

:offtopic:No your the idiot because i had the prove in my f***ing hand dude you just like to attack people on here like you do all the time here it seems...Are you a Journeyman Mechainc???? with over 25 years of experince and has worked at Toyota for around 12 years???I doubt it....Nope all the stuff with the caliper was fine it was the pads and you could see the damage it had done to the rotors there was a channel worn in to the rotor...You need to stop calling people names and attacking people like that.. Did I call you an idiot NO!! All I did was share my damn experience with this and you feel the need to attack someone you have never met or talked to....People like you give these forums a bad name one of the reasons I left Pirate4x4 years ago same with Toyotatech....:snacker:

So I should do my brakes after like 5000K??? what the hell are smoking?? 5 months is too short to replace pads in MY opinion

I hate to tell you this...but Toyota does NOT make brake pads or rotors. They are parted out to companies like Wagner or Akebono. Not only are they not made by Toyota..they aren't even designed by Toyota. Brake manufacturers have assumed that duty over 20 years ago. Toyota (and all other manufacturers) give the brake manufacturers the specs and they design and manufacturer the brakes for them. So those Toyota brakes you pay $100 for can be bought at the local parts store for less then half. The EXACT SAME PAD.

Re-read what I wrote...only slowly now so you can actually understand it.

What I said was..."Brakes that are installed improperly have a high degree of chance of not lasting even 5 months." If the brakes are installed properly (AS LONG AS YOU USE A GOOD QUALITY OEM OR AFTERMARKET PAD)...they should last 40-80k miles...depending on your driving and use.

Of course someone working at Toyota is going to say that only Toyota parts are the only ones you should use....Geez...doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that one coming. That doesn't mean they know what they're talking about. It's in their best interest to say that theirs are superior.

So far I havn't needed anything for my 4Runner.. BUT I've used Brembo (OEM replacements), Centric, NAPA gold, AdvanceAuto cheapos, and ATE rotors on other vehicles. The only ones that were horrible were the cheapos as they would scale up fast which will lead to poor braking and a shaking steering wheel.

Pads I've run Hawk, wagner, Apex, Metal mashers, AdvanceAuto gold and EBC.. All worked well as I buy my pads for what I want them to do.. The sport cars got sporty pads, the wifes car got ceramics (less brake dust) and the trucks/utilites vehicles got load friendly brakes..

I always look for a deal but have a hard time buying cheap stuff when it comes to brakes that said I also don't buy the top of the line stuff as it would be overkill for 99% of the driving I do.

I installed NAPA rotors with NAPA ceramic pads (premium). I've put 6000 miles on them and have had zero issues with strong, smooth braking. The OEM pads kept causing vibrations due to uneven pad material deposits -- if I cleaned the rotor with 3M wheel or a burnishing tool they were fine for a month or so (~miles) before starting to vibrate again. I'm not a fan of the OEM pads. As far as rotors, I would just get the cheapest OEM-grade rotors.

I've had problems in general with parts from Advance, Pep-Boys... I'll buy wax and oil from them..but in general their parts aren't what I consider high quality.

Brembo makes excellent brakes. The local parts dealer I use has Wagner and Brembo and Raybestos. Never had a problem with Wagner or Brembo pads/parts..EVER. Good high quality parts. The ONE time I used Raybestos some 25 years ago.....the pad surface ripped right off the metal frame. Needless to say I wasn't pleased. I only heard one other case of that happening..and that was about the same time frame. Never heard anything bad since then..but just one bad time will sour you against a certain product.
