What to do if your battery's dead?

One reason I've always preferred a manual transmission, is that if you're in the middle of nowhere and your battery goes dead, you can at least push it or roll it down a hill, and pop the clutch to start it. Unfortunately manual transmissions are becoming rare, and my new 4Runner is an automatic.

So…if I'm out in the desert somewhere and for some reason my battery fails, what are my options for getting it started again? (Other than using a satellite phone and calling 911 for Search and Rescue -- I'd rather not have to do that just for a dead battery.)

Bring your own battery jump. I have this Diesel rated version. There is a cheaper gas version. There are also multiple cheaper units from the competition.

I use this one from Costco. It works well. It's no help if your battery actually dies though. I have AGM batteries in all my trucks.

Been meaning to get something like this and could have used one this past weekend. I had to run the 4runner for like 20 mins to charge my phone enough to be useful before heading out of the desert.

I picked up one of these listed below, and it works quite well, and it does have the power to jump start your car, or charge your devises, the battery charge lasts a long time even just sitting in the case.
