What to protect cargo area with?

On my old car I just had a weathertech cargo liner, but wondering what I should use for the cargo area of the 4runner. Would like some protection of the sides as well.

I have seen the canvasback stuff, as well as obviously another weathertech cargo liner... but then I was also thinking about something like a moving blanket? I've never used one in my life would water get soaked up or run off?

Hoping for minor impact/scrape protection as well as being able to contain dirt, water, snow+melting snow, etc.

Is a moving blanket a good option to keep back there? Something else, canvas-like that isn't an expensive canvasback solution?

Do you have a slide out cargo bed or the regular kind? I've got a slide out that came with the factory rubber cargo cover..I hate it, the cargo cover that is..any time I put something heavy on it it slides out..You're right the canvas back is not inexpensive but that's what I'm looking at for mine.

Definitely can't hurt to keep a cargo blanket back there as well.

I mainly find them not that durable, I've got some cuts through mine already...

If it's a temporary situation, a waterproof tarp with a moving blanket outside of it. You get the moisture proof barrier and the cushioning.

I use a YETI Lowlands blanket upside down (rubber side up). Its big enough to cover the sides. Whenever you need a sturdy blanket to throw on the ground and enjoy the view...there it is.

Ah that's interesting (also, $200 for a blanket!?) when I am looking it up, it seems the non-color side isn't rubber though? Have they changed it?

i typically buy the brown/silver ones at home depot. much better than the cheap blue ones. can find heavy duty on amazon, etc as well.

This rubber truck bed mat works great for my needs, although I don’t live where it snows. My dog can keep his footing on it without sliding all over, and works pretty good for dirt, mud, and wet dogs. I just pull it out and hose it off when it gets bad, and I really like how when i put something in there it stays there. When i cut it to size i made sure to have a piece to be able pull out to cover the bumper when my dog get in.

I ended up buying a knock off for like $40 and it works great back there. It's double sided like the Yeti but obviously not as high quality but it works good enough. Great just to have in the back in case you need a picnic/beach pad or even use is as a blanket for any trail side repairs.

I made a base plate that replaces the carpet and is rhino lined. Very tough, holds up to a lot, and is water proof.

I keep a Harbor Freight Wool Blanket in each vehicle - $12.

60" x 80" Wool Blend Blanket

Let them air out bit. They stink when new. You can put em in a Pillow Case with the end knotted and wash them with wool-lite if the stink really bothers you.

I've used mine multiple times to lay on the snow / mud / wet pavement to get under the truck or kneel on to change a tire.

A wool blanket is handy for keeping warm and even putting out fires.
Also works good for covering items you don't want others to see.

Another option it to combine the wool blanket with a moving blanket like this:
