What TYPE of BLACK paint is factory?

I'm looking for a legit source of information. Your "buddy who does this everyday" isn't the kind of authority I'm looking for. Not "I know because I've been doing this for 67 years.." :boxing:

Definite and verifiable.

I'm running into a wall :ybrick: about the 202 Black on my 2002. Search is returning threads with lots of opinions about what brand, color match, or method to use, but not info about what type of paint was sprayed by Toyota on my runner when it was built.

Between this site and yotatech I can't find an answer with a legitimate source of information to reference.

What type of paint is factory 202 black on a 2002 4Runner? (single, double, enamel, urethane, ect???)

It's urethane based, as all automotive factory paint has been for a long time, and is a 202 base coat covered with clear coat. I know this because my buddy who has 67 years of experience told me

202 was used as a single stage AND as a two stage Urethane. On a new vehicle today I can guarantee you it is two stage, but who cares, you want to know about a 3rd gen. The way to know for is easy, sand it with 2000 grit, if the paper shows black, it is single stage, if it shows whitish almost gray than it is a two stage. Toyota used single stage Alkyd Enamels in the 80's, but solvent based color and urethane clear on all metallic colors since that time and until water borne color was required. But that was mid 2000's so does not apply to our rigs.

On reason you can't find solid information is because there is no one answer. Toyota uses different manufacturers and types of paints based on local laws and availability in the region they are building cars, which is all over the world basically.

I know this because I was the snap on sales rep to the Toyota training center in Torrance, in the 90's. I also owned my own body shop from 99 -2013. But mostly I know this because I know this. :artist2:

It's also worth pointing out that many manufacturers keep this information to themselves. Toyota has long been secretive about the source and brands of their paint.

I can see that my 2002 202 is single stage after a little wet sanding. For my purpose, that's definite and verifiable. Can't get much better; thanks again.
