Whats a fair asking price on this 4runner?

Hey guys,

Previous 2003 4runner owner. Sold mine in 2010 with 160k miles, problem free. We have owned 2 Tacomas, 4runner, Highlander and a Tundra.

Thinking about picking up another one to help get out of debt. Found one on CL with 188k miles. 4.7L limited. Asking 6995 OBO. Says he did timing belt and other things recently. Here is the link:

It has hail damage, rear fender damage and worn leather. Whats a fair offer? If I go look at it I was thinking of taking it to a near by Toyota dealership to inspect. Will they take it seriously?

Small world, I called on that one, I do not believe that is a 4wd drive model if I can recall correctly. I never offered him anything, because I got deal from a 1 owner a few weeks ago via Craigslist. I paid $13K for mine fully loaded. I am not too sure of your budget, but Toyota of Denton has a few great used 4gen 4runners that I told them to stock as I was in the market and they called me back 2 days too later! I was going to offer $5500 and work my way from there. I won't pay more than $6,500 for it.

I am no Toyota guru by no mean, but know quite a bit from what I do(Chrysler technican), even with all the maintenance done, it is till close to 200k on the mileage. I would stay away, did not seem to caring for the vehicle over the phone! Cosmetic wise, it does hurt the value a bit and the way I (myself) purchase vehicles.

Well, for starters its not 4WD.

It doesn't look that bad in the pictures. Honestly, taking that old of a truck into a Toyota dealer to check out is just going to cost you $100 or so. If you know what to look for, just make yourself a list and check things off as you personally inspect the vehicle. Take a flashlight, look into the valve covers and look for dark staining or sludge or evidence of poor maintenance. Check brake linings and condition of rotors. Check exhaust and also tire depth. Drive it and note anything abnormal and then base your decision on that. I don't think a Toyota dealer is going to to be totally honest with you. They're in the business to do service work, so they'll probably over exaggerate everything.

Now, I may be a little cynical about trusting a mechanic, but let's face it, there are plenty of mechanics out for their best interests (making money) over your best interests. The good ones are out there, but are becoming few and far between. Do a small amount of homework on what to look for and check it out yourself.

That's not a bad price, even for a 2 wheel drive. But really it depends on how the steering, suspension, engine and transmission feel when you test drive it. It has the v8 so you may have the exhaust leak. It's an 03 so it may have the cracked dash. Check the service records on toyotaowners website.

Tires look bald in front.

So many variable to consider.

I say, go look at it. It says serviced at Cowboy (formerly Fowler) Toyota. If I were in the market for one, I would defiantly take one at this price serious.

I do general maintenance on my vehicles like oil changes, spark plugs, etc, but I'm no mechanic. I would not trust my eye and knowledge. I called Toyota of Lewisville and they said they would do it for free.

Seemed off on all his or her answers :argue: , I asked the same questions over and over in different versions to get the truth out between him and his wife(girlfriend)/whatever. I am very knowledgeable when it comes from people trying to sell me a car (job again, it comes in handy sometimes)


I would look at something else, if I was you I would opt out for a 4wd regardless of V6 or V8...Just my $0.02 cents

Why does everyone say 4x4? This is going to be a pavement pounder. We do fish and get out in pastures a little, but nothing that needs 4x4. I hate that it hurts MPG as well. Is there any real benefit if you are never going to use it? It ices here only a couple times a year as well.

I need it for what I love to do, overland. It is a MUST for all of my vehicles here @ home, not a single one is 2 wheel drive model.

I would rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it!

If you choose a 2WD model, you should look at the 09' as I believe they have a Rear Differential Locker...but do not quote me just yet...
