I'd complain more about the dealer only accessible black boxes and encrypted ECUs than the number of sensors.

Sensors are cheap and easy to do yourself.

Yeah, there are much bigger issues at stake when they start in with encrypting and dealer-only service. The sensors at least add some kind of functionality, even if the driver doesn't directly see the benefit.

Yeah I'm not going to be surprised if it's just a matter of time before all your sensors will be encrypted as well and will pass signed data to the ECU rather than simple voltage variations.

Why? So that you're stuck using OEM branded sensors that cost $100 each rather than $10 3rd party sensors. Honestly, I'm kinda surprised it has not happened yet. From the OEM perspective, they're losing a TON of money to 3rd party parts.

Just look at the cables for the new iPhone that have an authentication chip in them to make sure that only Apple branded cables work and 3rd party cables do not.

Haha, my friend, they're already out there... I work on sensors that use digital communication protocols instead of simple voltage outputs. Communication protocols are used so that they can have lots of sensors on a simple 3-line bus rather than running a separate wire to every sensor, but it also means that you need to read the protocol to get the measurement. It's almost there...
