Wheeling, and Bear Attack!

Different areas have different recommended ways of keeping bears away. In Yosemite preferred way is to use a bear canister stored away from your sleeping area, while in Yellowstone bear canister is not required but campsites are set up with horizontal logs that span two trees. Food bags are hung mid-point. I like to tie off other end of rope to a farther third tree, so bear does not severe the rope as it climbs the tree closest to food bag.

Nice photos. I'd like to link up with you sometime up there.

Getting complacent on food in camp will definitely result in unintended consequences by the local opportunistic creatures.

I carry bear spray in my vehicle along with a .40cal on my side. About 3 years ago we were backpacking in WY and had a big sow and cub stroll through our camp. Our food was properly handled, but still, it was a little more difficult to sleep that night knowing my ultralight tent and my mummy bag would only be like tortillas holding them at bay.

@dorton

My schedule is wide open except for Jul 12th (wrenching party), and possibly the 19-20th. Just let me know when you can get up this way, and we'll plan a run.

I haven't wheeled 'Potts Mountain' in the GWNF, but I'd like to.

Too true.

I'm ordering 4 cans of bear mace. One for my 4Runner, wife's CJ7, and one for each of us when we're away from the vehicles.

Too many bears / deer - not enough hunters.

July is out for me, but in a good way(I'm heading out west), but when I get back, I'll check and see how my weekends are looking and get back in touch.

I work every third weekend, and do some training for the .mil every 6 weeks. I do enjoy it up in that area though. Maybe a Potts Mtn run would be a good one. Have you ever been to Big Levels?
