When can you not fit in most parking structures?

So... At what point do you start having issues fitting in most parking structures? I would like to have level, 285s, and a rack on top but I need it to fit in garages for work and because my wife will just rip the top of the car off given the chance.

I am on icon 2.5-3" lift and 285s with yakima cross bars.

I would recommend measuring your height accurately on level ground with an empty load.low fuel and taking careful note of what your minimum clearance is.

Once you've done that almost all structures are very clearly marked...

For what its worth I can center structures 6'9 or less with my current setup, only by a hair but no issues so far.

I haven't come across any parking garage yet that I couldn't clear even with my Loadwarrior (empty) on top. I measured that the highest portion of my ride is 81". If I came across a warning of anything less than 84" I likely wouldn't chance it, or just drive in reaaaaal slow. :crazy:

Not sure how anyone can answer this. There are plenty of paring structures over 8ft. Then you go into major cities and I've seen some as low as 5'6.

Just lift it, measure afterwards, and pay attention to where you're parking. All garages have clearances clearly labeled. If it doesn't, do go in.

Why don't you go to the lots you frequent the most and give it a quick measure to see how much space is left...then plan your lift and other mods accordingly? No one can give you this answer really because it all depends on your particular parking structure. For example my tiny ass garage almost ripped off my roof rails at stock height, lol. Also keep in mind the factory antenna is a couple of inches taller, so I usually use that as a safety measuring device when I enter a low parking garage--I keep an eye on it to see if it scraps, and if so, how hard it scraps

Well, I figured most people with lifts have had experience with the average height of parking garages. I haven't ever paid attention. And as you can see from the original post, it's not me I am worried about for the most part, it's my wife who drives the thing daily. And she just doesn't give a poo. I realize I could measure it and then read the signs.

That's what I do with my tundra... I seem to only hit it in one particular garage. I'll measure that. Thanks for the help!

The garage I used to park at when I was in grad school at Indiana University was like 7 foot of clearance. I would smack my bike trays that were on top of my Element on almost every pipe that was hanging down.

Now at Tech the parking garage is seriously HUGE. The spots are gigantic and the ceiling is so high that the clearance isn't even posted. Gotta love living in Redneck-ville USA where it is totally normal for an F350 on 35s to be a daily driver.

If it's your wife's DD, don't lift it unless she wants you to. If she wants you to, tell her she's going to have to pay attention to where she drives. It's really that simple.

But for your reference, I have 285/65R18 Trail Grapplers with 3" of lift and a Gobi with additional Thule bars on top of the Gobi. I'm good at 6'9. The only thing you have to be careful about are the "shortcuts" some people take when they cut across the parking lot and drive over the parking spaces or pull through instead of backing up. Garages don't require to tell you how low that part of the garage is. Ask me how I know.

This is a smart question.

In metro areas there are a lot of structures at 6'4" some even less

If you want a convenient, true go anywhere, overland rig plan to be under 6'4" height.

I now have 285s, saw rear springs, icon all around, baja flat rack, lots of weight w bb skids, shrock bumper, and cargo drawer. I recall my truck is 6'2" to the rack. Antenna is trimmed at 6'5" . I still need to make a sign for the dash.

^^Truth. I had a lifted Xterra... and a company E250 van and both found the height limit in situations like that. Sh*t happens!

Here in Boston, garage heights range from 6' to a rare 7.5-8'. You just have to always be reading the signs. I park in a garage every day at work, and I'm only 4" from the limit... which definitely restricts my lift/tire/rack options. I didn't even put on ski racks this year for fear I'd clip them on a sprinkler pipe! Its just a matter of awareness. It might be worth driving around and making note of some of the parking structure height limits in your area to get a feel for what kind of envelope you're dealing with.

I have the OME lift and and RRO Adventure rack which adds a little more to the height, I have to drive into San Francisco for work frequently, there are not any downtown garages I can fit into, you would not believe how low some of those garages are in the old buildings downtown! I have sort of given up trying and I just use street parking over by the Embarcadero. Fortunately my go-to parking garage for Giants games is a big warehouse, fine there.

At work I forgot my Yakima box was on the roof and pulled into the garage. The PVC warning pipe made a hell of a thud on the box. Fortunately I was able to back out without any issues. This person on the other hand just kept on truckin.

I can't fit in some of garages stock, the others give me few inches clearance. Depends on a garage really.

The height limit for the parkade at my condo is 6'4". Once I installed a 2.5" lift, 285's and a Baja Flat Utility Rack I could no longer fit as the truck now sits 6.5".
I can make it in if I air down, but I have to back in oddly enough. That's my contingency plan plan in the case of a severe hail storm warning
Mall parkades are usually fine, unless I have my spare or the roof top tent installed, then I'm up around 7.5" and I just won't fit anywhere but outside.

Most of the parking structures in WA that I go to are 6'8". Currently stock but with aftermarket bars and yakima loadwarrior with extension I'm at 6'6" and can fit comfortably. Biggest thing is to just measure the height after each modification you do and if you're concerned then make it the height more modular, like a roof basket vs. Gobi Stealth which is permanently affixed.

Folks got a question for you. I have a 4runner sr5 4x4 everything stock and im going to install ome suspension and 285. I was wondering how many inches is this setup going to increase height of vehicle. My parking lot roof is about 6.5 inches above the roof rails.
