When to Replace Recall/Toyota Replaced LBJs

My truck got it's lower ball joints replaced around 50K miles at a dealership by the previous owner through the recall and I'm now at 205K.

My question is: Should I think about replacing the LBJs soon? Has anyone else replaced the LBJs after getting the recalled ones replaced through Toyota?

I struggled to find answers for this so I apologize if this has been asked before. I'm just curious how long I can expect recall/Toyota replaced LBJs to last. Thanks!

Mine got done at about 80k and I'm at 281 now. Many on here will say even the toyota replaced ones s/b replaced at 100k intervals, regardless of what they look/feel like.

I've bought mine and am waiting for a friend to help me since we have to grind the existing ones off and bolt the new ones back on.

On the flip side my regular mechanic says they're just fine and doesn't suggest replacing them. Go figure. :cowboy:

Even the recalled ball joints fail. General rule of thumb is do them every 100k miles. If I was you, I would replace them soon.

No, the one's on there from toyota were welded. Have to grind the welds off and replace with aircraft quality bolts/nuts.

Hey I didn't catch the SLO part of your site id, I went there a couple summers ago on the way from san diego to stockton where I have siblings (too the slow scenic route there), really nice place to hang. I mostly saw the downtown area, loved they way they incorporated SLO into many of the business names in the same manner you did. :cowboy:
 
OP yes, the original owner of my truck had them replaced around 50k miles under the recall, I replaced them around 166k, and plan to replace them again around 250k. Not worth the risk.

What? Post pictures of where your lower ball joint was welded on by Toyota and you have to grind it off... Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude, but I find this hard to believe.

It's 4 bolts from the bottom that go into the spindle and the one castle nut that holds the LBJ and LCA together. There should be no grinding, welding, or aircraft grade nuts and bolts... Replace with Toyota ball joints and new Toyota bolts with blue locktite torqued to spec.

My apologies - I went to take another look - my buddy (who I'm really wondering about now) thought he needed to take the part next to the lbj off also (which is what he thought needed to be grinded off). You are right, just 4 bolts and the castle nut. Is an alignment required after this? thanks.
 
I looked up the recall for mine and says there's no active recalls.

I may need to go to or call Toyota to see if this has already been done.

No worries, just didn't want something to go horribly wrong with your truck... Alignment won't be effected by just changing the LBJs.

There was a recall for 01-02 4Runners LBJ. You could get one free replacement over the life of the vehicle basically. Most had their's done a long time ago, but there are still a few out there that never went in for the recall so you might be eligible for a free set of LBJs.

The new ones aren't any less prone to failure so don't think it's a permanent fix. Like most said, still plan to replace them every 100k or so just to be safe.
