Where should I move to in colorado?

My family and I are thinking about moving. Right now we live in Owensboro, KY. Mostly we are moving because we feel tied down with shit jobs, no better employment opportunities, and nothing fun to do. We are both 21 and have a 1 year old son. Thinking about Colorado.. Anyone have any suggestions on where? Keep job opportunities, family friendly, and of course wheeling in consideration.

Yea cost of living differences is huge. It would definitely take some time to recoup from that. We are both in mortgage banking but I dont have a degree in it, she does. I am looking for any kind of work, dont really care just good paying.

For mortgage banking, you are likely looking in/around Denver or maybe Co Springs. Unless we're talking entry level, I'd try to have something lined up and then pick a place to move. It would suck to move to Castle Rock and end up driving to Broomfield every day.

However, if you enjoy the outdoors, personal freedoms, mountains, guns, wheelin', and general shenanigans... come on over pardner :thumb:

Most people seem to enjoy settling in on the Front Range like Bofa up there, but I wholeheartedly endorse higher altitude living. The resort areas are seeing a resurgence of vacation home buying, so mortgage banking might be a good ticket to ride. Check out Summit and Eagle counties- it doesnt suck.

Definitely a higher cost of living, but the jobs also typically pay higher than the national average as well. If you keep tabs on your family budget and minimize wasteful spending, its not really much of a challenge to make ends meet. Dont worry too much about the degrees, its a good attitude and real job experience that employers are looking for anyways.

Not pursuing the legalization aspect of colorado, not that I do not enjoy a toke every now and then, I can get that here in Ky. I am looking for something new, some beautiful scenery, good hunting land, and of course an upgrade in wheeling. I am looking around for jobs but havent landed one yet. If anyone hears of anyone hiring..banking or not..please let me know. I would love for my family to start a new life somewhere not so...bland.

I also agree with the high altitude living. That is really what I'm going for. I love the woods and I love the mountains. I have plenty of woods to choose from here in Owensboro but no mountains..

I have to agree with [MENTION=91673]MtnT4R[/MENTION], if you can find a place in a mountain community go for it! I would love the smaller more personal feel of a small town. I live in Colorado Springs and its great but after 15 of living here its gotten to the point of not too much to do, at least not in the winter. We are one of the few Colorado people who don't do winter sports. In the summer, every chance we get we're in the mountains which is only 15-20 minutes away!!

Just for fun…Today Colorado Springs was named the most romantic city in the US.

Yeah, if you can find employment and housing in a mountain town, I'd go for it. We might have considered it but I need to be within reasonable proximity to Denver.

That's one of the reasons we really like Castle Rock. It has a bit of that small town feel (Old Castle Rock - south of the Meadows anyway) but is still within a short trip to dining/retail as well as Co Springs and Denver. Plus it still rural in some areas and gun friendly. Getting to the mountains is a bit of a hike, but like you we'll probably hit them up more in the Summer time.

Large enough population to allow for all the stuff you may want 40 restaurants, Walmart, Target, Big5, movie theaters, all major parts stores, and cost of living is hardly above the national average. BUT...it's a short drive to Ouray, Telluride, Silverton (sorta). So you get all the awesome mountain wheeling and camping and all the comfort if the larger population.

I just gave you the cliff notes, but in all honesty, my wife and I are looking very strongly at this area, it really is affordable, populated and surrounded in every direction with the beauty that CO offers.

I wish my job would transfer me to Craig CO. Still a small town but they have a lot more than I have around me now. A lot of nice looking towns in CO. My dad is originally from Leadville CO. I actually wish I could live there but I'm not sure there is much for jobs there.

You might also want to check out the Grand Junction area. It is further away from Ouray (just under 2 hours), but only 90 minutes from Moab.

Ouray wheeling is great, but it only lasts 3 months of the year. The rest of the time, you have back country skiing or ice climbing. Moab has pretty much year round wheeling, if you pick your trails carefully.

Your kinda stuck in the middle when it comes to going to the mountains. Denver I70 or Colo Springs hwy 24....pm incoming
The southern part of Castle Rock is much better and much less congested...traffic wise.

Definitely. Thanks for the pm - we'll have to do some exploring. Yeah I'm really digging the south part of CR. It's a good fit and close enough for the occasional drive to Cracker Barrel. :lol:

Yep, pretty much like what everyone posted. There are so many little mining and farming towns that have transformed into tourist destinations where there are great jobs and so much to do you literally don't have time for it all. My house is a perpetual disaster because we never have time to clean it- I work all week, ski at lunch, ski/hike/climb/camp/raft/wheel all weekend every weekend. When we get home at night we are usually too damn tired to do much more than make dinner and pass out in front of the tv. I understand that's not everyone's cup of tea, but if it sounds like a good time to you, we have 2,500 square miles of mountain terrain and its all pretty awesome :cheers:

You all have definitely been a big help. I appriciate all the info and I'll be looking into it all. So many beautiful places to choose from I dont even know where to begin. Hopefully we will get up there some time this summer and maybe some of us could meet up. I'm starting to collect some parts for the runner to get it ready for some real wheeling.

I will definitely have to look into this area more. I would love to live close to Moab.
