which has more issues, V8 or V6?

I guess the question is, if you maintain your own car, get the v6. if you'd rather have someone fix it for you and pay for it, get the v8.

Not sure I understand your point. I fix and maintain all my vehicles. Why would I want the V6 over the V8? My decision between the two had nothing to do with the maintenance required.

Now if it was the decision between another brand and a Toyota, I'd much rather not have to perform any repairs, and only need predictable easy maintenance, which is what led me to Toyota :)

The real answer is the truck with the most issues is the one that hasn't been maintained regardless of it being a V6 or V8.

I am pretty sure that when they freshened up the 4th gen with the 4.5 gen in 2006 they fixed the head gasket issue. Between the two, the 4.5 gen v6 is more reliable. And that is ONLY based on the secondary air injection pump. Which, you can bypass with slyfox's bypass kit. Given that, I would still pick the V8.

Haven't searched, and really haven't seen much on air injection pump issue. What exactly is that?

There are two V8s, one with VVT one without. and one V6, but a 4 speed or 5 speed transmission.

In order of desirability of the 4 options. Dead last is the V8 without VVT. Second to last is the 4 speed V6. Up for debate for best one is the 5 speed V6 or the V8 with VVT

I'd pay up for the latter two engines. I'd pay less for the first two. I'd consider them a negative for the vehicle to have either.

If it's for your wife/girl friend then go ahead and get the V6 otherwise get a V8 if you can find one. You are not going to save that much gas with 6 banger.

V6 = GIRL TRUCK
V8 = MAN'S TRUCK

While I generally agree with that... the V6 does have one thing going for it... all that extra space under the hood makes for a really nice overland / ExPo setup with more room for a spare battery, low voltage disconnect, Automatic Charging Relay on-board air, and a host of other mods...

End of the day, it really depends on what you want to do with it... and I could care less about the gas mileage either way... there are still reasons to pick the V6 power plant.

I am an avid 4wheeler... I dont think I would ever trade my V6 for a V8... 200k+ miles and its been about the most reliable rig i have ever owned.

By far the most stupid comment on this thread. This is what happens when you know nothing.

It's a bullshit epa feature will cost you a bunch of money to repair. Search for Secondary air injection pump and you will see the threads Bout it. There is a bypass kit that works well. I actually need to get one. When. I bought v8, the pump went out but was still u der dealer warranty. Cost them a bunch to fix too.

Clearly the HUGE amount of power you get from the V8 (roughly 20hp and 35 ft. lbs) outweighs the gas mileage loss and timing belt and exhaust manifolds!!!! Oh and the fact that its always in 4wd:thumb: I will take the 5spd v6 anyday over the v8.

have you actually driven one with a v8? spent any real time driving it?

I doubt he has, based on his comment.

Both engines are great, and both have their own pros and cons. I don't know why people bash one to justify the other.

But seriously, they both have their issues. Biggest two issues I've seen

V8: More complaints for cracked headers, secondary air pump failure 2005+ V8 (rare?), maintenance is slightly more expensive due to timing belt

V6: MOre complaints about head gasket failure

I only test drove a V6. I bought a 2006 V8 4wd 14 months ago. I love the power. Gas mileage doesn't matter, as I came from a 5.7L suburban.

This is a very biased subject, Drive them both and get what you like. I will take a V8 on any car if the option is there.

Yeah based on the minimal paper difference I went with the V6. Then I drove a GX470 for a few days and damn, forget the paper stats, the V8 has a lot more torque down low. I bet it would be obvious if we compare dyno curves. Now the V6 is great and I love my 20 highway mpg as I drive some 70-100 miles every day but if I had to make the choice again I'd probably have gone with the V8.

The V8 can put out 270 lb/ft at only 1000 rpm. The V6 makes 282 lb/ft max at 3800 rpm. Big difference.
