Which plugs/wires for 22RE?

Hi all,

A few weeks ago I had the engine of my smooth-running '87 detailed. Immediately after it began idling roughly. I assumed some water had gotten were it shouldn't and would clear itself out. It hasn't.

Now I think I should just replace some typical tune-up items...plugs, wires, air filter.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for those items?

I like NGK plugs and wires. you don't need any fancy platinum plugs for our 22RE engines, I usually settle for the middle of the road on price. I pretty much always get my air filters from the dealer though, unless it is just too inconvenient.

Toyota specifies NGK or Denso plugs in the FSM. Since NGK are easier to get at the local parts store that's what I use.

As for wires, any good brand is fine, the heavier (larger mm) the better.
Also, OEM wires from Toyota aren't that expensive.

Today I installed NGK BPR5EGP plugs, Bosch 7mm wire set, and a new air filter. It seems to run a bit smoother at idle. Enough so that I don't feel the need to press the pedal for more RPMs to smooth it out. eace:

Q1: Why did the wire set come with 6 wires? Four plugs, one from distributor to ????, and a spare. I'm confused.

Q2: I replaced BPR5EIX plugs. Can anyone tell me the difference?

I was getting quotes on wires from local parts stores and the dealer ranging from $105 to $150 :frisky: . Found some ngk's on rockauto for 33.
