Which to buy...

So I've narrowed it down to two 4R's. In the left corner is a 2001 with 128K miles, SR5 with leather and upgraded sound system but is tripping the code for the MAF and CatCon. My mechanic says maybe replace the O2 sensor or MAF but that the CatCon is fine. Will need new tires soon. Price: $7200

In the right corner is a 1999 limited with 203K miles, rear diff locker, in good condition. Recent spark plugs, wires, and brakes. Leather in great condition. Drives nice. Needs a new 4WD transfer case motor but otherwise very sound mechanical condition. Price: $5000

I don't plan on doing a ton of off roading but would like it to handle some trails if need be. It will be my daily driver. Definitely want to do some mods in the near future.

Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

Thanks so much.

Where are you located? That plays a role on other things to look for. If the first one looks well taken care of, I'd go for that one. Especially if it's going to be your daily driver. When you get over 200k you have to start considering a bevy of other maintenance items like lbj's and such.

This can get expensive.

I'm in Richmond, Virginia. The first one does look well taken care of, although I'm mildly concerned about the CEL (which also disables TRAC), although I don't want to have to worry about much maintenance and I think at only 128K miles would afford me the liberty to do more mods?

9 times out of 10 the Cat converter code is cured by a new upstream O2 sensor and cleaning the MAF. Id go with the first one.

I reckon the truck with 128k is the one. IMO 80,000 fewer miles of uncertainty is well worth $2,200. For an ill-maintained runner 200k is about the time when the noises start. At 128k you're taking control precisely when the most crucial maintenance items will (slowly) arise. If LBJs haven't been replaced on the higher mileage yota that's $5-800 you'll be spending anyways.

Word of advice with any 4R you pick up: Do maintenance FIRST before purchasing mods.

Sound advice. That's definitely the plan, I was thinking more long term would you rather be modding an 01 with 130K miles or a 99 with the rear diff but 203K miles? I assume the former, but this is all still pretty new to me.

Thanks Rip, that's kind of what I had thought from reading the forums and talking to my mechanic, but it's good to hear it from a 4R "expert". I've enjoyed reading your build page, it's definitely got me excited about my new 4R. I'm on my way to pick up the 01 as we speak!

Thanks man, good luck.
