Okay I've looked for the cause of my problem i've checked my pulleys with a stethoscope and now I'm posting my own thread. So my '99 4Runner Limited with around 193k on it has made a whining type sound since the day I bought it in December. It only happens during acceleration and starts around 40mph or so while i accelerate the sounds gets louder but stops as soon as i remove my foot from the accelerator, which leads me to believe its not a pulley, possibly a fuel pump. When i first noticed the sound it seemed to come from under the hood but after listening closer i can't really determine. its like a whining/whurring sound. Someone must have had this problem before and can help me out. BTW i dont have the money to take it to a proffesional so any help from some of you gear heads will be very much appreciated. Sorry for the long post but im really irritated with this noise.

I think I have the same sound as you have, only that it happens during acceleration under 40mph. The more I give gas, the louder it gets and I can't seem to figure that out either. I notice that it only happens while the car is moving and when the gas peddle is pressed. When the car sits still, the sound never occurs even when I rev the car. When the car is rolling under any mph without the gas peddle being pressed, the sound doesn't occur as well.
I hope you will figure it out and let me know or vice versa.

Usually the most whining I hear from acceleration comes from my g/f in the passengers seat. :lmao:

i had a sound similar to that and it turned out to be the torque converter

yes i did, it was around $1,200 if i remember correct. it was worth it considering if that went out then id need a new transmission. im not 100% sure thats how much it was id have to look at the paper work
Still needing help with this guys. I'm gonna start in the next day or 2 doing some work, the oil change and replacing the rear shock absorbers would like to get this whine outta here also. I also have a slight ticking/clicking sound that has shown up and gets louder with speed but not so loud that you noticed it with the windows up, any clues to this.

Since it's only happening during acceleration (under load) it's almost assuredly in the power transmission system (torque converter, transmission, transfer, differentials, and bearings by association). The noise you're describing sounds like either gears (mostly like gears, but the terms used are vague so let's keep it open) or bearings.
First and most importantly, check your fluid levels and condition. If your fluids check out, since you said it sounded like it was coming from the front, I would start with the transmission/transfer.
You said it starts at 40mph and increases from there, you're likely looking at an issue with 4th gear. Bearing(s), fluid, or both.
If it only starts to get really NOTICEABLE at 40 mph, and is actually increasing across the gears instead of just through 4th, then I would pay more attention to the transfer. Same diagnosis here just in a different box: bearing(s), fluid, or both.

I figure out my noise was it was the drive-shaft after lubing the shaft everything was back to normal.

Can you explain how you lubed the shaft? I also have a whining noise during acceleration and think I'll lube the shaft as well to see if that fixes the problem. Thanks!

I had a similar experience - ended up being the rear u joint. Does it still occur when shifted into neutral while at speed?
My noise only comes on when the car is moving at any speed while pressing on the gas peddle. The noise does not come on when you park the truck and giving some gas.
The way I figure this was
1. I eliminate all wheel (jack the 4runner up spin the wheels) no noise
2. Park the truck give gas no noise so eliminate the engine.
3. Turn off radio
4. check converter shield
5. the only thing left was the drive-shaft ( I have not lube the shaft since the day i bought 98 4runner it now has 214k.

Like Brad said about the stereo, even though the stereo is off, it can still produce engine noise. Make sure your power wire if you have an aftermarket amp is running down separate sides of the truck away from your RCA cables. Simple fix if its your problem.
