Who has ROTOPAX? Heli coil backed out!

Hey guys...

Who has ROTOPAX installed on their rig...

I thought this was a quality product but after one single install & removal the heli coil that they use in the upright base backed out!

They don’t glue these in or anything??? What gives? Heli coil came out immediately!!!

I’m glad this happened to me upon initial installation otherwise I would have been screwed if I was out & about......

You got a bad one man. Shit happens. I have a bunch of rotopax stuff and have had zero issues with them. They get used a lot. Call them and have them send you a new one.

Unless a Heli-coil is "glued" in with some sort of retaining compound, they can easily back out. The threads in the hole don't look buggered up, so you should be able to grind a small flat relief onto a bolt to use as a make-shift install tool. Apply some 272 loctite (red) or some 609 ( preferred if you NEVER want it to come out ), thread the insert back in and remove the install tool before it becomes permanently fused to the repair coil.

I can't speak for them, but it's a good general practice to use heli-coils or keen serts in a soft alloy part that will see high repeated stresses. That being said, I'd be curious to see if they used the coil inserts in the other parts of if someone goofed when making the part and they used the coil for a repair.

[MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] I have only used my double mount that is doubled up probably a dozen times, but so far I haven’t had a problem with either the mounts or the extensions. I’m guessing you just got a bad apple. Hopefully they replace it for you no problem, especially considering how much they charge for their stuff.

If a thread is not likely to be done up and undone more than a few times in its lifetime, a helicoil type thread is the strongest option. However, for threads that are used over and over again like sparkplug or oil plug threads a helicoil type insert tends to work its way out of the hole over time and a Time-Sert is the more permanent repair. I had to use a time sert on my oil pan drain about eight years ago and have never had any issues.
