Why do you hate your 4Runner?

vague feel of the drive by wire accelerator and the touchy brakes..

Using the pedal commander, I've almost got the accelerator to where the responsiveness is where I want it, but the brakes have been the toughest getting used to..

I actually ended up just selling mine.

Ultimately, the gas cost to just sit in traffic for 66 miles each day wasn't worth it. The on-road manners aren't great if it's largely used to just commute in. Ideally I would have kept it, but I'm running out of space for vehicles.

Exhaust coming in the rear window.

The next upgrade will be side exhaust pipes to reduce exhaust drag.

Nothing yet, just bought a 2018 trd off road premium

No rear dome light
Wish was about 6” wider up front
Steering wheel doesn’t tilt up enough
Stupid “all weather mats” that are forced to buy
Lack of storage space without mods.

The brakes! I’ve had it 6 months and I’m still not used to them. Maybe I suck at driving, but I don’t recall having this issue with previous vehicles. (Too many to count)

I felt the same until I put Akebono pads on the front. It makes it turn into a much more normal vehicle. They grab harder off the get go than the stock ones, so you have the brake assist kick in much more rarely than with the stockers.

Agreed. No doubt that rust will eventually be the downfall of mine, and probably what will make me trade up eventually. Sad thing is, mine sees much more care for the undercarriage than most, yet I'm still losing the battle over the long term.

I clicked every box. I am basically driving a $37K pile of horse s***. Why Toyota, WHY!

I had an 11 year old ford explorer with lots of issues....so this 4 runner is an upgrade and I like it so much more than the explorer....but for the 40K MSRP, they should :
run a little better.
more horsepower,
better brakes,
better headlights,
better paint,
better tires,

This is my 17th Toyota 4x4 so I have been drinking the cool aid for a long time. For the most part I love my 4Runner. Just like my last 3 2nd gen Tacomas the brake feel is beyond horrible. I did run brembo pads for a while which greatly improved it as well as stopping power but they were horrendously dusty and squeaked a LOT. And the rears wore out really quick so I ditched them. Might try some akebono's. The way I have mine set up with 285's of course mileage isn't awesome but I have never had a truck that got good gas mileage. I really wish these were available with a manual transmission still also. But it's been 20 years so I doubt that'll ever happen. Keep thinking about getting a trans/transfercase from a Tacoma to make that happen. But it would likely be an electrical nightmare. I can imagine atrac and crawl control definitely not working after something like that.

I like my 4Runner or at least 95% of it. My two mayor complaints are the interior panels seem to scratch way to easily. I have treated the interior kindly but if you look at it crooked there is another scratch. The other is the lack of power at hiway speeds or at least the constant downshifting.

I would go back and buy a non-KDSS 4runner.

And I do wish it had the 5.7. But, overall it’s nice ride. Oh and the fellows at work call it a sorority car. In my city 99% of the 4Runner drivers are female.

Your coworkers seem like idiots. It's almost universally regarded as one of the few masculine styled SUVs out there.

Also why would you drop KDSS?

Don't worry most are just whiners. If they were given 10,000,000 usd , a 80 foot yacht, and any car they want they would still find something to whine about. Enjoy your 4 runner for what is it, a reliable offroad worth mid size SUV with some roughness by design otherwise the full size Range Rover or G550 is waiting for you.

I have an '03 V8 Limited that I bought used 5 years ago. Every project is a battle with rust. Going to install rear sway bar bushings; broke both bolts off on pass side, got one out and one still rusted in place on driver side. Removed sway bar (that was fun!) and the link securing nuts are frozen in place and the sway bar itself is 2/3 crusty, so will be getting new for all. Noticed rea fuel tank strap is rusted in two, broke the rusted in place bolt securing that strap off, more fun coming.
My advice to anyone who buys a new, or slightly used, 4Runner is to remove and grease/anti-seize ANY bolt/nut that you ever envision having to remove in the future because if you live in winter climate/salted roads you are in for much more work for every job because of rusted fasteners, starting with the skid plates that just just step one in most jobs.
