Why don't replacement pads fit my 99's calipers?

Folks, went to swap front pads using a set i picked up on clearance @ Rock Auto. Not fit. This on Saturday so i order a set of Akebonos from NAPA for Monday delivery so i can button it up.

NOPE. Same issue. HELP!

Where there two different sized calipers issued in 1999? The pads on it now have are wider between the pin slots than both sets of 99 4 rnr front pads i have now. As below....

There is, 4runner with 15" wheels got smaller calipers vs 16" wheels.

15" rims - sw12wm caliper 297mm

16" rims - sw13wm caliper 319mm

Now it looks to be the the same pad maybe?

Is it the backing plates being different size? Or is the pad to thick?

Along with the stock brakes having two sizes, there are two different bolt-on (calipers+rotors) options from the Tundra that could also be on there. Check caliper casting marks to order the right parts.

I was going to echo Charlie. Have you owned your 4Runner since new? If not, there is a good possibility a previous owner installed a Tundra brake upgrade (TBU). It is a popular modification of which there are 2 flavors.

No my son bought this one a few years back, lost a head gasket, and i rebuilt it. It has large wheels/spacers/lift kit so I SUSPECT a prior owner did upgrade the front calipers.

The pads installed are literally .650" wider across the pin locations.

i FOOLISHLY wiped the stencil off the one with brakekleen. I may have to pull the pass side pads out to read the stenciled PN.

These are not your standard " 438" pads.

So from what year Taco does this popular swap come from?

Over the years, I did both 13WE and 13WL upgrades. You may be able to determine by looking at your calipers. Here's what they look like. I don't have a pic of my original caliper.

well Wayne, i sort of did " ready FIRE! aim " deal and saw the local NAPA had a set of Akebonos in stock for an '05 Tundra ( not Tacoma - DOH!) , and they will do the trick!

I cannot tell from your pic exactly, but it looks like a 199mm setup to me.

Still not super happy with the pedal, but will get to rears soon enough and do a system bleed and see if it helps. For now i dont think the rears are self-adjusting.

Caliper casting number is on the caliper... part of the casting itself. Brake pad part numbers won't help. The calipers all look similar-ish in pictures, so don't go off that. Look for that casting number and use that as a reference for the correct parts.

Like i said Charlie i took a"pot shot" on 05 Tundra pads, and those Ake pads fit perfectly. Brakes feel good! Will be better when i get shoes/bleed.front hoses on, no doubt.

restored at 272K, now i am ironing the kinks out. Including a nasty oil leak i caused on the reman henco en mexico Taco5VZ. GIve GearHead Engines and their Mexi reman crew BIG KUDOS for a very happy, purring nicely at idle 5VZ.
