Why I love this forum...

Got my Rola Rack low-mount kit from Armortech a few weeks ago and since we had some nice weather over the Christmas weekend, I thought I'd install it. I loosened up the cross bars but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to take them off.

So I ran inside the house, googled "toyota 4runner crossbar removal" and of course the first link that showed up was to this board, explaining how to pop off the covers at the end of the rack to allow the crossbars to slide off. After that it literally took me about 25 seconds to pop off both rear covers and slide the crossbars off, then to slide on the Armortech Off Road nuts.

Now all I need to do is get a rack and I can mount it, but having the nuts in the track should make that a 10 minute process, at most. I also like the "clean" look of no crossbars on the roof.

So thanks again to the forum, it's a great source of info! :thumb:

(I should also point out that the only reason I knew about the AOR kit was through this forum. I loved the look of the Rola rack but HATED the way it sits on top of the cross bars and leaves 4 - 5" of air under the rack.)

Yes, this forum is totally awesome pretty much for whatever project you want to embark in. Whether it's tires, lifts, spacers, lighting, stereos, etc etc etc. So long as one contributes to a thread (I try to share findings on whatever it is I'm doing to a pertinent thread, even if it's years old) and keeps the information up to date, this forum will remain my favorite. Good folks here.

Short of installing a Flux Capacitor, you can find info on pretty much anything on here.

Having been modding for over 10 years, I definitely have a good bit of confidence, however I haven't done a single mod to my 4Runner that I did not find on here. This forum has led me to cut brackets, and frame/body panels that I never would have even considered otherwise :girl:

My first "mod" to my first car was trying to install 1990 taillights on a 1984 model. It was a Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. There was a metal bracket inside the tail light that wouldn't allow it to fit. Pissed me off! Realize I was 16 and no internet owners forums back then, LOL. This took place in 1991 if memory serves...........

There is no cure after being bitten by the mod bug.

I'm about to do the same but I couldn't figure out how to get the crossbars off. So they slide out the back? I was trying to figure out the front. Do you have to remove the side rail or just pop the rear cover off? How does the AOR kit go on? I have the kit but no instructions. I'm guessing the squares with the threaded holes go in the roof rack slot? Then what?

I think you could probably take the factory crossbars out the front or the back, assuming that the front has the same kind of cover as the back (not sure.)

And yes you are correct, the square nuts go inside the track on the factory rack and then you attach the L shaped brackets to the nuts, last thing would be to use the U bolts to attach the Rola Rack to the L brackets with the nuts provided. Pretty simple install, overall.

Note: The L brackets are not rust protected so it's a good idea to paint or otherwise coat them. I didn't and mine are badly rusted, but I have to take the Rola Rack off anyway (for other reasons - I need to mount 2 kayaks to the roof and I can't do that with the Rola Rack) so when I have them off I'll sand them and then paint them.

Thanks, I got it figured out the other day. i didn't know the roof rack had to completely come off the back. That's a pretty stupid design in my opinion.
