why is this cracked and what is it!?

96 sr5 with 320xxx miles. last week noticed a clunking sound when I would accelerate from a stop then it go away. drove 30 min to HD and on the way home about half way it started shaking really bad and got really loud rumble noise and then a terrible noise don't remember it and th e4wd shifter went bananas. steered off I70 into the grass. I tried to give it some gas to get more off the road and I didn't move. got under the car to see the transfer case completely cracked. well now I've taken the transfer case off and it seems the piece that cracked is the part between tranny and tcase where the output shaft seal is. idk what that's called . I have a spare parts car and just curious can I do a straight up swap. everything is the same. I just don't know what's beyond those 7 bolts towards the pan? I started taking them off and tran oil started so I snugged everything back up. so can I take that off and swap with new part and tcase from spare parts car? ALSO what would have caused this?
thanks for any help. would be greatly appreciate being this is my only car and rental car bill is adding up!

Can't say I saw one of those cracked. However, as long as you match the part with an identical one. I don't see any issues. It's not the actual transfer case or transmission.

Those extender blocks might be all the same. [ not sure on that one] I would verify that your brackets and bushings are all good and hold that together as something cracked that housing very badly..

Yeah I’m still confused with how it happened. I was doing probably 70mph when it happened. But the rear drive shaft Carson joint is fckd, it’s all seized up and metal chunks were falling out of it when I was taking it off the tcase. So idk if that had something to do with it? The parts I have for it all seem To be the same. So hopefully all goes back together easily

You may have heavy damage. The drive shaft is probably bent. Hopefully, no damage to the transfer and the rear 3rd member.

You won't know until you put it back together..

Luckily I have a parts car with everything I would need. Hoping the drive shafts, t case and adapter that cracked is all I need to swap.

Something similar happened to my friends Durango. I believe his driveshaft siezed up and cracked his tcase as well. Yours could have suffered the same fate. I don't remember tge exact details, but similar result

I am thinking on the lines of TucsonMike here.. that upper u joint gernaded that caused the issue. Granted, its just a guess.
