Why Shrockworks is definitely worth the price!

Well today was an interesting day that made me glad to be an owner of a 4runner with a Shrockworks bumper.

So i was driving along minding my own business today and some lady decided it would be smart to try to get across before i got to the intersection, I had a green light and she did not. And when you mix a 4500 pound hammer with a crappy dodge stratus you get...

a car sammich!

On a serious note, I was driving southbound at 45 mph, I had a green light and was about a car length from the intersection when a lady was in the turning lane on the opposite side of the intersection. She decided that was the perfect time to go and left me absolutely no time to slow down. All of the sudden is saw a car in front of me and then a wave of glass on my windshield.

I had the complete right of way and had nothing that I could have done different in that situation.

Luckily I was not hurt, just a little shaken up. Not sure about the driver of the red car. She was walking but cut from the glass and completely freaking out and confused about what was happening. They took her to the hospital in an ambulance. All I know is, that bumper saved my truck, lots of damage, and saved me a hospital bill for sure.

Question though... What if someone was in the passenger seat? Lets say the lady's 18 yr old daughter who just got into college on a full ride to UT Austin, and the fact that your crumple zones are disabled on the 4Runner (the Metal bumper doesn't absorb any of the energy during a collision) caused her to have a Traumatic Brain Injury ( TBI ). She's now wheelchair bound and eats out of a stomach feeding tube. Just food for thought.

2nd point- Lets say you hit black ice in texas(who knows)... and you hit a barrier head on or a pole or a tree or whatever, you get no impact dissipation and absorption from your bumper and your airbags may not deploy, you get the TBI... I think there should be a disclaimer about these sorts of upgrades.

For off road use its a no brainer- this is a perfect add on.

For on road use it potentially makes the car more dangerous for yourself and others.

Impressive results & photos. MICA4R has some very good points on the pros - cons of a bumper like this. I will say that if I had to roll through a heard of Zombies, I would want your rig.

Thanks everyone for the responses, MICA4R you make a very good argument but to defend myself against it I would make this one. Things would have been different without my bumper.

1. My car would have been very heavily damaged, aka totaled, as well as her car, which might have had slightly less damage. +1 for bumper

2. My airbag(s) would have gone off,tack on more damage and costs and not to mention airbag injuries, and I probably would have been injured and had to pay hospital bills. +1 for bumper

I'm pretty sure that hitting a car directly in the side passenger door at 40 mph even without the bumper, a car the has no side crash protection would still crush up nearly just as much and the passenger would have been hurt just as much. So sorry but your argument just doesn't convince me.:shrug:

Lets not forget user error. It doesn't matter if you drive a little nissan versa or a Ford PSD a car can be lethal in anyones hands. Now the bumper has slightly changed the way the vehicle impacts, ie how it absorbs and dissipates energy but the vehicle driven is still a 2+ ton SUV hitting a 1-1 1/2 ton car, simple physics.

People are stupid. Just yesterday I had a lady pull out in front of me while her lane of traffic of was going 10-15mph, and mine was going 40 mph. Why such a huge speed difference? It's four lane freeway that goes down to three lanes just before another three lane interchange meets up (with two for through traffic, one that's an exit only).

Glad you are ok. Great testament to the shrock toughness. Hopefully the lady was fine too. There is nothing wrong with protecting yourself in case someone does something stupid like she did. P.S. I wonder if she was talking on the cell at the time.

Bumper or no bumper, the sheer force of momentum and vehicle energy would have harmed the hypothetical passenger. The Dodge's door beams did their job of keeping the 4Runner out. There's still a beam behind the stock 4Runner bumper skin. Scenario would have played out nearly the same for Passenger X whether he was stock or not.

Impact absorbsion is carried by a certain degree by the front bumper beam, however, if you watch most design studies, the crumpling areas are designed in the frame rails and hood. These are the areas of the vehicle that truely absorb impacts. Airbags deploy on a variation of speed and deceleration force. So if he does hit a tree at speed, his car will crumble up to the point of design, and meanwhile the rate of deceleration will deploy his airbags.

In the end the best thing panned out:
Nobody seems to have been hurt. He didn't seem to sustain much damage, but at least got to drive away from the scene. The only thing I'd wonder of the truck at this point is it the bumper that's bent or the frame.

The sensors look for speed, inertia, and impact direction and intensity to deploy the airbags.
