Hey Folks, this is an SUV. Mostly engineered to go to the soccer field with a bunch of kids in tow. The 4wd system is what the selling point for most of us. You can always upgrade your suspension and brakes, then you can catch the other guy out braking them in the corners. Ha Ha.
I had a Tahoe LTZ 2 door rental back in 2013 driving from Louisville to Evansville, Indiana. It would cruise at 75mph turning 2k rpms. The 5.3 V8 downshifted to 2500 rpms every time there was the slightest hill. Perception is always relative to the person driving. Is the 5th gen under powered? A little, but I have never had a problem getting to hwy speeds even loaded down. Just drove from Florida to Arizona for the holidays and the truck did fantastic. 2003- I opted for the 4.7l V8 & TRD Supercharger- torque and hp, make for a an excellent driving experience. Still going strong with 270k on the clock.
My 2016- while a nice vehicle and my daily driver- the non-linear throttle is crap. The Sprintbooster is how it should come from factory.
Government telling us what we can and cant have. So by by V8's.

slow throttle response = better control off road
Perhaps this is not an "eco conspiracy" and Toyota's engineers just wanted to make it easier to carefully modulate the throttle at the low speeds encountered in off road driving. The slow throttle response that irritates people when trying to accelerate on the street could actually be a benefit when off road. If I'm trying to ease the truck over a tricky obstacle, I don't want it to take off like a bat out of hell when I touch the gas peddle.
On the other hand, there's no reason they couldn't have added a button for a "sport mode" that remapped the throttle for street driving. Then we could have our cake and eat it too.

It really seems to be an issue with transmission mapping. I had a 5th gen limited a few years ago and couldn't stand the lack of power, I was bothered about what I was getting for the price. Now I am in a 4th gen V6 and it doesn't bother me at all, so the issue isn't the engine itself.

I have been mucking about with my 4th gen...according to the ScanGauge2...at 230hp I would get 17mpg.
After messing around with a couple things, today it hit 295hp(ScanGuage2) and 13mpg.
I am at least 5k lbs. with all the steel insurance bolted on.
One thing about these motors, as others have noted, they have to be howling to make the HP.
