Why Such Varied MPGs w/ 3.4 V6?

I know this was mentioned a few times earlier in this thread but please do not ever turn off the engine when coasting down a hill. You will lose your power assist for the brakes and steering and if you turn the key off all the way your steering will lock and you will not have any steering at all. I did this once a long time ago when I was trying to figure out why my 86 Pickup would bump start immediately, but would crank forever when trying to start with the starter. Heading down a hill, steering is locked, brakes barely work and a car heading towards me. I just missed clipping the car before I got the key turned back on and got the steering unlocked. Just not worth it for a few cents of gas

It was a bit of a joke on how to test for mileage downhill.

So what was the issue with your 87 truck? Slow cranking?

The problem was lack of proper grounding to the ecu. It cranked fine just did not want to start After months of chasing the problem it was solved by a friend of my brother in law who installs car stereo. Over the phone 3000 miles away. Even told me the correct colored ground wire for the ecu. Spliced in a ground to the original wire and she fired right up with the key
