Why syncros go bad...

Q: What would cause my 4th gear to pop out...4th syncro?
(shift lever bushing intact)

Grease Monkey did transmission change 1000 miles ago. When I checked level today it was well below and inch from level.

Did they mess my tranny?

What should I do?

Take it to another shop, play dumb, have them check it and have proof.

Popping out of gear isn't an indication that a syncro is bad. Syncros are used in gear changes, they bring gears up to the right spinning speed right before they engage so that the transition is smoother and they don't grind. They are usually small grooves or gears on the outside surfaces prior to gear engagement (I've taken mazda transmissions apart and they are brass).

Popping out of gear is an indication that :
1. gears are worn and do not seat and meet properly and have good contact.
2. one of the linkages, in this case for 4th, is bent or messed up in some way which does not allow for proper gear selection/mating.

Fluid will have something to do with it as it allows for lubrication of the gears and proper gear function. Definitely find out where a leak is occurring and fix it ASAP.

I hope the above helps. I'm no transmission expert, but I've taken a few apart before.

Can anyone else help? If I'm off in any way, please correct me, I'd like to learn too.

Thank you very much for your input. Maybe I do have a leak!! I will check tomorrow morning. But 2 qrts low??? I truly think Grease Monkey forgot to add oil after draining. How long would it take to notice there was no oil in tranny? 10 miles, 20 miles? It's scheduled for new clutch and tranny work on Monday.

Do you have any words of caution when dealing with shop quote. I wish I had the garage, and equipment to remove tranny. I could at least but in a new clutch. Looks and sounds easy enough.

I just bought this truck and really limited on funds.
