Wierd rattle in the back of my 2004 4 runner....

I have a rattle in the back of my 4runner and I can not figure it out.

It is a rattle with a weird sound. It happens when I go over rough roads and when I sit in the back when my wife drives, I can here it but can not locate it.

it only happens when I go over bumps....

I found a missing bolt on my rear window air deflector, replaced that and that was not it. I took out the jack stuff and that did not stop it.

I usually can find rattles, it takes a while and a lot of trial and error..

I do not think it is a wheel bearing issue as those that I have heard get louder and or quieter when i turn. This has nothing to do with turning, just rough roads.

Any ideas on what I should do to figure it out ?

This is on a 2004 4Runner with 150K miles on it.

2nd Row Seat Latch? or is it in the way back of the vehicle?

Jump under your car and take a look at heat shields

Check your crossbars on the roof rack and see if they are loose. That was the source of my mysterious rattle.

Maybe spare tire needs to be cinched up a tad.

Mine rattles and squeaks because apparently Toyota didn't like to put the huge plastic trim tightened down correctly back there. I think it's just all the seems of the plastic (and there is A LOT of them) back there rubbing and vibrating together so I'm eventually going to put some foam or felt between them to see if that improves it.

Inside or outside? Reason I ask is because if it's inside, look at the way the jack is mounted in the left rear inside panel, if the jack is not snugged up against its stops it will rattle.

My rear hatch rattle drove me nuts for months. It was sometimes a raspy squeak, sometimes a metallic rattle. Thought is was my custom roof rack for the longest time. It was inconsistent but always came back. Wife would drive with me in the back with the plastic rear hatch/door panel off, and I still couldn't tell where it was coming from. Had to individually check ALL fasteners, bolts, unions, metal on metal, etc., inside the hatch door. I found a couple loose nuts and thought all was good, but it came back. If I recall, tightening the nuts around the door opening mechanism inside the panel finally fixed it. Required a triple jointed monkey wrist to reach some of the fasteners. Good luck.
