Wife Dilemma, SR5 or TRAL/PRO?

SR5 with the Trail hood. Like magic.
I did the wife delete mod, (not over the vehicle... ) so I don't really have a dog in this fight

I rarely use the word never however..I never plan to put myself in a situation where I need more than 3 seats..

I really wanted 2016/2017 Tacoma V6,4x4, 6MT but there is no way I can convince my wife that the truck was for the family. She asked, "isn't 4Runner kind of masculine?". I told her that 4Runner TRD is very masculine but a SR5 Premium seemed gender neutral. As long as she got a black 4Runner SR5 Premium, she would bless the purchase. I am glad I got a 4Runner in lieu of Tacoma. I was able pack everything inside the 4Runner for two college students. It was raining on their college move day. I got 19 MPG going 75mph to Madison and 21 MPG coming back at 75-80mph to MSP. I am impressed with the ride and reasonable MPG.

I was in the same boat 2 years ago when I bought mine. I wanted the Trail, wife wanted the third row, got the Sr5. She did make a good point though, she said "Are you really going to use the extra features that come on the Trail?" The seven years I had my FJ I never needed anything more than 4hi so I would probably never use the crawl control or locker. I do have to say the third row has come in handy a few times and if I need to haul something I take her new Tacoma

The paint, e-locker and crawl are the things you cannot add. I say they are minor. Keep the wife happy.imp:
Actually, you can add all that later. There was a member on here that added crawl control to his SR5. You can add an e-locker or get the ARB locker. Paint is just paint, you can make it any color you want.
I'm on the other side of the fence. No 3rd row here and we wouldn't want one because there's no room for cargo with the 3rd row seat. They're not that comfortable anyway. We carry 4 additional passengers (5 total) in the 4runners occasionally just fine so I'm sure your little brother will be OK. We do actually use the rear locker though. We don't ever really use the crawl control but I do like the manual transfer case lever, not a deal breaker though. We both like the scoop though. A ridiculous, non-functional scoop but we like it. No KDSS and we didn't want that either.
Having said all that, I take my 4th gen with no lockers (yet) on all kinds of crazy stuff and have only encountered a few things I couldn't make it up.
You can probably score a better deal on a SR5 than a trail and put that saved money into mods though. It comes down to compromising and what you both are willing to give up.

I tried to do that and failed miserably. I lifted mine 2.5" and swapped the stock tires for 285 when the wife was at work.

+1 for the SR5 w/ 3rd Row. you can add a locker if you feel you need it later. And there are plenty of SR5 guys on this forum that are built up to Zombie-Apocalypses levels to inspire you to make changes if you want.
I was in a similar boat when i was buying a couple years ago...the Trail looks tougher and has some toys, but even more than you, about 15-25% of the time my family of 4 does have that extra one or two kids in tow...so my wife suggested the 3rd row if possible for whatever SUV i purchased.
When those kids you are bringing are 5ft tall or shorter, then the 3rd row is perfect. Even when we only have our normal two, for longer road trips, we set up the 3rd row as its own seat and fold down the seat in front...
Ive sat back there a few times, its not that bad when you slide the 2nd row up some to give more leg room to the very rear.
and as you said...when you do need it, trips or just for emergency transportation for more than 5, you'll be glad you have it.
My son is in the 3rd row, enjoying a 6hr road trip with his own power outlet and a row to himself...luggage is next to him.

I am happy I found this thread. The wife wants a third row. But I want a trail. Its nice knowing that everyone else is submitting to there wives as well. Not just me.

A few more considerations
I will chime in here since there are a couple of other considerations, depending on your future plans with the rig.
We have the SR5 premium with the 3rd row and we take ours off-road 1-2 times per month. We got the 3rd row planning for kids in the near future. No kids yet, so we haven't used our 3rd row AT ALL!
Pros of the 3rd row are obvious, but limited.
1) You get some extra seats
2) Keep peace in the house (non-trivial)
3) I like that the 2nd row folds down in 1 motion, versus pulling the bottom of the seat forward, then folding down the back. Not a big deal either way, but it's nice to just grab the lever and fold down the seat when you have your hands full.
Considerations:
1) You lose some cargo height (about 3-4") with the folded down 3rd row and quickly lose your rear window visibility when loaded up
2) The tie-down locations closest to the rear hatch are not placed well. They are in the more usable cargo space towards the center-line of the rig versus the Trail being tucked away to the side behind the wheel well.
3) The folded down 3rd row limits your options for built-in cargo. There really isn't a good place to bolt into the seat back. I have my fridge slide secured with tie-downs to the car seat loops on the 2nd row and rear cargo tie downs (con 2 comes into play here)
4) Already said, but the locking rear diff and crawl control are not options for the SR5. The locking rear diff can be added fairly easily. Crawl control is a little more challenging, but probably less useful.
5) Hood scoop and transfer case levers are both cool to have, but not that big of a deal
Just my thoughts as a 3rd row SR5 Premium owner. Currently without kids, I wish I had purchased the Trail. But I anticipate getting good use of the 3rd row with kids and all of the family we shuttle around.

So the assumption is that I still have my balls because I am not? Not everyone lets other people make decisions with their money.. single, married or otherwise.
Then again I typically seek out relationships where independence is respected not trampled over. I'm not a marriage kinda guy but I do find civil unions palatable and even then my significant other knows boundaries. I don't tell her (nor do I guilt her and nag her) into purchasing what I want her to get with her very hard earned cash.. and in turn that same respect is granted to me.

How long will the 12 year old be able to fit into that third row area? The trail or PRO will hold better value. The SR5's are a dime a dozen around here.
