Will A Lexus Smart Key Work?

I've given this subject a lot of thought. I keep my key in my wallet and a thinner piece would be awesome.

You don't need to find a new key, just make the one we have slimmer. If you pop it open, you will see how fat the plastic frame is. It should be possible to create a ridgid (important) frame that fits over the chip with a much thinner section. You will give up use of the buttons, but I don't use them anyway.

Anyone work in a CNC shop?

Yea I had the same idea and have been down this road. I had someone quote me on a new cnc'ed casing for the key internals. Came back at 450.

Cool idea, but still not happenin for me right now.

Anyone ever confirm if the newer Lexus smart key can be programmed to work for 4runners?

What really got me thinking, was when I stumbled upon a new(er) version of the Lexus smart key:

So all in all, I am still not totally sure it will work, and have too many other "more important" mods lined up than to drop the money on this now. I also might consider making something to house the key before I gave this a try. But I thought I would ask around here and post what I found in case any of your guys were interested.

Not yet to my knowledge. It's still something I'd like to try.

I still get a PM about this every so often so it seems to be a popular topic. Maybe I'll get around to trying it this summer.

So, how does a smart key do after it has a close encounter with a magnet?

SHOULD be fine. It's just a small circuit and a low power radio transmitter in there. No strip to de-magnetize (like in a credit or hotel card) and no disk to mess up (like in a hard disk in you computer). So I don't see any problem with a magnet.

I'd look into it a little more though before I tried it...

Here's some guys on the prius forum saying it should be fine...

Here's an actual document from Toyota stating to keep it away from TV's, PC's cell phones etc.

Yea I wondered because I have a badge for work I use to scan in and out of the facility along with using it to scan to sign out tools and test equipment. It has a chip inside that doesn't like magnets. Although we try to be careful, I'd think a keyless remote for a vehicle would be more prone to issues.

Any one have any update that they've verified with their own 4Runner

Yep, I can verify. I brought a Lexus smart card off Ebay, FCC ID: HYQ14AEB, off ebay. I also bought the service to wipe the card of its prior programming, then I programmed it to my car, 2015 4runner.

I don't know if any other Ids will work.

Reviving this ancient post since I too ran into this on TacomaWorld and ToyotaNation with people having success with Tacomas and Highlanders.

Has anyone given this a shot with a 4Runner? Based off of my research for my 2020 TRDP, the part number for the smart key ECU is 89990-35030. Unfortunately I can't find any actual pictures to match the TMLF12-1 model ECU that's been confirmed to work with Tacomas and Highlanders.

Edit: Just noticed that homerhriss got it working on his 2015. With the smart key rolled out to other trims beyond the Limited over the past couple years, this should be applicable to more people than before. Who wants to be the guinea pig for the 2020/2021 :)

Any idea if users are able to get the trunk pop button to do anything?

There's no buttons on the Lexus card key, so you're fully relying on the door/hatch to lock/unlock.

Just some additional info from my research.. I found a pic of a 2021 smart control module on eBay (link below). The ECU matches the TMLF12-1, note the model number is 89990-35040 instead of 89990-35030 of the 2020 model.

I've also confirmed that my 2020 keyfob matches the Tacoma - part 281451-2110 AG.

So close to somewhat confirming compatibility for my 2020, I would just want to confirm the control module model but unfortunately can't find any pictures. And IIRC, the thing is buried behind the glove box so I don't think it's something I could easily check myself.

Oh! “Card key” wasn’t clicking in my brain. I was looking at standard remotes and thought “man these look kind of … the same” haha!

I wish I could get a Tacoma key or a 2021 4runner smart key and program it to my ‘16 limited.

I want the slide key option with the AJT cover. But it’s only available on Tacoma and 2021 smart keys.

Has anyone programmed these keys onto an older smart runner ?

I could probably send you a 3D printed version that has the slide for the key and works with a 2016 Limited. I did the AJT fob and disliked not having the physical key. Also didn’t like the stock fob. I know that the 3D printing look isn’t for everyone though.
