I'm debating on getting an aussie locker or an e locker. There's a junk yard a few hours away with a tacoma that has an e locker, will the 3rd member fit?I've heard that its a little different in size.

It requires the same retrofit work as a 4runner diff. The only differences are the tacomas axle(set up for leaf springs) and the tacoma elocker has a different plug.

Alright perfect so the 4runner axles will fit without modifications?I guess wiring shouldnt be that much different.

With an e-locker the 3rd will fit. You just have to modify the housing, as stated.

A Taco with out the e-locker runs a 8.4" 3rd.

A Taco with an e-locker runs the 8" third, the same as the 4Runner.

Look up Singtoe. He did a e-locker retro on his runner. It's not too hard.

From the page:

"Electric Locker

A factory option on 3rd Gen. 4Runners, Tacoma 4x4's, and Tacoma PreRunner 4x2's is an electric locking rear differential. This diff is a 4-pinon design based on the Turbo/V6 8" diff and uses the same gear sets and bearings (except for the large bearing near the locking mechanism).
These locking diffs can be retrofitted into 8" diff axles if the axle housing is modified (see this article for more info). It cannot be easily retrofitted into a T100/Tundra or open-diff Tacoma style axle housing because the mounting bolt pattern is smaller. It "could" be done by an axle builder by doing major work to the mounting flange, but that is not really a practical option.
- 30 spline pinion on OEM gears, swap pinion flange to 27 spline to use aftermarket gears"

They are the same housing.

The Tacos with OUT the e-locker have the 8.4" diff.

Alright so 2 of you guys say no and 2 others say yes...anybody here actually swapped a tacoma e locker 3rd in a 4runner and any major mods need to be done other then the minimal shaving and thread tapping?

Corr:didnt see previous post.

LOOK UP SINGTOE. HE'S DONE IT.

Google search him on this forum.

The only thug different between the Taco and 4Runner with a e-locker is the housing.

The 4Runner uses coils, while the Taco uses leaf springs.

Doc2012 says singtoe did it and I think mmml was thinking of the 8.4

Google singtoe Tacoma elocker swap and you should find where he did it.

Sorry man. Long damn night, even worse week.

The article from that Eric guy states that the e-locker is an 8" 3rd.

4Runners use 8" 3rds. Tacos withOUT e-lockers use the 8.4". That's why I had to do the Chevy leaf conversion on my Runner. Got a set of ARB air lockers with 4.88 gears off a guy, but they were from a Taco. I did the leaf conversion, and put a 8.4" axle under the truck instead of the 8".

Tacos and 4Runners are basically the same damn thing component wise, with the exception of the non e-locker axle. Anything from a Taco, except the rear axle and a manual transmission, will bolt right to a 4Runner.

It will work on our axle, but modifications will be necessary. You have to cut a notch in the right side of the axle opening for an e-locked axle. Luckily with Tacoma axles you don't need to regear as they are 4.10's just like most non-locked 4runners.

All the info here is correct. Its just so ambiguous that its confusing you..

With the diffs themselves they are the same except for the plug on the actuator. Tacoma diffs are more common in 4.10 gears and 4runners are common in 4.30 gears.

The axle housings are where the differences are, the opening in the housing is different for elockers and it must be a toyota 8" axle. The tacoma has the 8" with elocker opening with the elocker or the 8.4" axle without elocker. 4runner have 8" axles regardless, but the non-elocker version will need to be modified to allow the elocker diff to go in. Its best to find a 4runner elocker axle if you can, makes the whole retrofit much easier.

And yes, I have done an elocker retrofit.

It requires the same retrofit work as a 4runner diff. The only differences are the tacomas axle(set up for leaf springs) and the tacoma elocker has a different plug.

I know this is an old thread, but my 2005 Tacoma's e locker actuator is corroded beyond repair ( north east of Canada) and I found one eBay for$220 Canadian.
What is involved with changing the plugs? Is it a simple conversion?
Thanks
