Will these gears fit?

I ran across a guy selling 4.88 gears out of a 86-95 Toyota truck. They fit in a 7.5" clamshell and I was wondering if I could swap the gears into my front shell or am I even luckier and can I swap the old assembly in altogether? I am setting up for 4.88's front and rear and I don't plan on installing until I have matching sets. Just wondering if these will fit.

Possibly.
Your front differential is a 7.5" clamshell differential.
Your rear differential is an 8" differential.

Probably not the answer you wanted. I am not sure so I don't want you to pull the trigger on heresay. In terms of gear ratio, I've always heard:
You have 295/70 R17's so roughly a 33" x 12" tire. 33" with a 4.88 gear ratio is proper.

Mainly Pavement usage: 4.88's
Mainly Trail usage: 5.29's

I've paid my dues with the search feature and am dead set on sizing.4.88's as I live in fl and offroad infrequently at best.... I'm just worlds away from calling ECGS and doing the full setup lol!

The front clamshell will not swap over, they changed in '96. The 7.5 ring and pinion should swap into your existing clamshell, but have your installer look up the part numbers and make sure before you pull the trigger.

edit - ack! Are they factory 4.88s? If so, they may not work for you at all, the factory 4.88s in the second gen had a unique carrier. Maybe the carrier will swap over into your chunk? I don't know. You've got more research to do.

your rear is not a clamshell.

if its a V6/turbo 8" rear it should work.

for the front. i have confirmed that a 95 gear set and a 2000 gear set for the clamshell have identical part numbers in the catalog

True. You cannot swap out the entire clamshell but you can however swap the guts.

i have also confirmed that the V6 95 (2nd gen 4runner) has identical part numbers for the rear gear set as well.

so yes. it should work

the reason i like this one is because you can put your VIN in to ensure you are choosing the correct parts. you can also choose by year make model trim line, engine, drivetrain, etc.

PERFECT FOR CROSS-REFERENCING.

if you click on the little "MORE INFO" button at the top of the parts list, there is a box that pops up that will show you a blow up of all the parts in the diagram (WITH PART numbers - unlike most the other toyota parts sales sites).

The front diff gears are NOT the same even though they are both a 7.5 clam shell design. The Taco/3rd gen uses reverse cut gears. The rear V6/Turbo diff is the same though

I suppose. i just know that the gears are not the same for the 86-96 IFS clamshell and the 95-04 IFS clamshell. The carriers are the same but the gears are not.

No you cannot. The 7.5" in the 86-95 models is a low pinion diff. And, its not even a clamshell. Its a solid diff with a removable diff cover.

The 96+ 7.5" is a High Pinion, clamshell design. It will require REVERSE cut gears to work. Its apples and oranges and will not work.

You need 7.5" Reverse cut 4.88s.

The only thing that will crossover between the two is a locker/carrier. That is it.


IN THE REAR ONLY:
They will crossover from V6 diffs into either the Elocker or standard V6 carrier.
