Ahh now I see where the invective is coming from...the recent news items about HOAs fighting residents over flying Old Glory or draping it over a balcony.
I just chose an HOA that actually supported the flying of Stars and Stripes.

I guess this is why so many people are for socialism and support people like Bernie. I remember not so long ago, you would be arrested for treason for being a communist. Look how far we've come. People actually WILLING to PAY for more RULES!
If you don't see it for what it is, you're blind.
That's one small aspect of it. They ignore federal law and most people are sheep and will just pay, back down and conform to someone else's standard.
Hell Trump was fined > 100 grand for having a flagpole too grand flying our colors.

I'd chose to live under a dozen or so more rules so I don't wake up and find a double wide meth trailer home with 4 broken down trucks on cinder blocks one morning next to my house.

Because people are *******s and don't comply unless money is involved. Sad but true. And law enforcement really can't do anything beside tell you to stop. Law enforcement also will laugh in your face if you tell them that, "My neighbor's trashcan is still out", or, "he hasn't mowed his lawn in 3 weeks!".
Tell someone that you'll charge them a little extra that month, and WHAM, they actually follow the rules they agreed to! They actually mow their lawn. They actually bring the trash in. They even keep the noise down BY THEMSELVES.
I shouldn't HAVE to call the cops on *******s at 3am. HOAs help to deter that riffraff.
I'm not sure which State/County the HOAs you keep referring to are in, but I agree that those are too strict
Flag Flying is allowed in my neighborhood (we even have extra flags for national holidays). Trash is allowed for at least a day for the odd-houred workers.
$25 a month to keep people's lawn relatively nice and to make the place a decent looking, decently quiet place to live, is not a big deal in my opinion.
I DO think that the several hundred dollar HOA dues for CONDOS and TOWNHOMES are just plain stupid though.
I'm a hardworking, God fearing Libertarian. I don't like people who don't work, and I don't like people who don't hold up their end of a deal. If you make a bad choice, you grin a bear it, and don't make life hell for the people around you. It's YOUR mistake, not theirs.
I do believe in Freedom of Speech, etc, but there comes a time when people just need to shut up.
Just because you are LEGALLY ALLOWED to do something, it does not mean that it's a socially accepted thing to do. Within the law, sure, but still just rude.

Professional real estate agents recommend looking at 2 to 3 homes, decide on one quickly and offer above asking price.
Oh, and skip the pesky due diligence period and don't bother with a home inspection.

This is hilarious. IMO, if a bunch of people have to live in close confines it is better to have basic rules so it is a level playing field. I live in a nice subdivision with a list of restrictions but no HOA. Everyone that buys a house in here agrees to abide by the restrictions such as no junk/non-running cars in the yard, no parking on the street overnight, no farm animals, no nuisance animals, etc... basically they say don't be a d*ck. These are put in place so you don't get the a-hole that decides he needs to park his cars and tractor trailer on the street since they want to use the driveway for basketball or the driveway is not big enough. Since we don't have an HOA there is really no enforcement.
On one of the streets in our neighborhood, we have a house with two or three junked Mitsubishis in the yard with all kinds of crap piled around them, even a surfboard. The grass has grown at least a two feet tall because they can't mow.
A neighbor next to me has hung up more wind chimes than you will find in a senior citizens trailer park and I've had to ask her to take down the ones approaching plumbing leftovers. Still, given a slight breeze I get to hear all kinds of clanging going on.
Another neighbor near me leaves his stupid dachshund out from about 7:30am until 9pm and the thing barks its head off all day. I finally talked to him and he puts it up during the time we are outside in the evening. Still, I have to run a fan in my office so I don't hear it.
A couple of other neighbors have decided to forgo the requirement of paved driveways. They drive bubba trucks and pride themselves how much clay they can sling on the street near their house after a good rain.
I saw the mention of "common sense" and how it should prevail. Really? There are too many people missing that trait and too many people who only care about what they're doing to worry about anyone else.
I also saw "there are laws against that". It depends. In our county there are no noise ordinances. If someone wants to blast their stereo in the middle of the night not much I can do. If a dog is barking in my windows all day, sorry. People shoot fireworks sometimes even after midnight. I can call and complain but nothing will happen.
Fortunately, 90% of the neighbors are decent and home values are pretty good. I can't imagine being the neighbors next to the junky yard when it comes time to sell their houses. I'm glad to be putting my house up for sale soon and moving. I learned my lesson. At the next place I want acres between me and the next house. But if I do end up in another subdivision I definitely want it to have enforceable restrictions. If I have to pay into an HOA to make others follow the rules, I will. I have no problem following rules. If I don't like their rules then I won't move there.

I don't know. Being somewhat OCD and with very good hearing, I find repetitive noises terribly irritating. I can't stand subwoofers even at a distance. Wind chimes are like aural water torture. I don't mind a dog that barks at something then quits. But the dachshund I mentioned earlier is a non-stop loud shrill "ark, ark, ark, ark, ark...." for hours at a time. When I'm outside, I like the sounds of wind, birds, an airplane flying overhead, a dog barking in the distance, kids laughing, coyotes howling at night, etc. I would find a basketball bouncing for hours at a time annoying if it was close to my house.
I think the OP's mistake is assuming what was observed short-term in a subdivision will last. I'm pretty sure I would rather live in a shack in the center of 20 acres than in another subdivision.

I looked at more houses because I don't like new construction. I can't stand cookie cutter houses and I actually like having a yard and the occasional tree.
I had to actually LOOK at the houses. Simply picking one of 4 floor plans and which house out of every 3rd or 4th house in a row was not an option.
I'm odd, I know.
Tell you what; I'll come to your work and bounce a basketball for several hours a day within a few yards of you while you're trying to concentrate. Lets see your response. It gets only slightly irritating.

Interesting (sarcasm) posts in this thread, couple of things come to mind, 1) first world problems...........2)they don't build houses like they used to, double bricked walls, heavy insulation, etc.3)I don't recommend living near the water as it amplifies sound even though you can not see the source..........ask me how I know.

I know this was a short term 'win' but I don't mind fighting again as necessary.
My own ranch or private island is ideal, but as jobs are hard to come by out there, I'll have to stick with adequately restricted communities.
Oh yeah also, dogs....don't get me started. Constantly yapping dogs are unhappy animals. Owners who buy a 'toy' but are unwilling to invest the time, energy, or money to train them properly. Leave them outside because it's easier that potty training, and they can't come home from work at lunch to let them out. Lets the work from home neighbors deal with the noise all day.
Completely disgusts me. It's poor planning and neighbors and the dog suffer for it.

First work problems, yes, but I'm not ashamed of that, nor should I be. I have a higher expectation of life and I'm comfortable with that. I won't feel guilty because some third worlder has to live on a noisy street.
And that's another reason why I like older houses. They have more character and are built more solidly. My inspector said that he actually sees more 'real' issues (structural, etc) on new construction because they are thrown together so quickly.
