Windshield replaced

I had 2 big rock chips but the 3rd one did it in, developed a crack that spidered fast when the temp outside went from 55 deg to 90 in one day.

Thank goodness for a $200 deductible...anyone want to take a guess what a limited 2010 4Runner windshield cost? (with labor)

It is amazing how much pitting/sandblasting the OEM windshield sustained. Well, I noticed that before I had the new glass installed.

Who replaced your windshield, and was it OEM or aftermarket glass?

Also, what method did they use to remove the windshield? I have seen places use a sawzal with a big sharp flat blade tip go at the old windshield, then kick it out from the inside...They made a mess and messed up the windshield frame.

Looks like you got the "Insurance Company Price". I'm sure the installer was happy with making $400 to install the windshield.

Safelite quotes "OEM" glass installed for $550. This is without insurance. Who knows what OEM means to them. I'd never let a Safelite employee near my truck!

Now I am super nervous.... I need a windshield replacement, but can't be around to watch them do the job... CURSES!!!!! I am close enough to work that I ride my bike, plus no parking at the office anyway even if I were to drive. I wonder if they do work on the weekends.... sucky!

My windshield is getting pretty pitted and has a number of small chips in it. I also have a small crack on the bottom corner of the driver side. You can't see it from the inside. It started about about 2 inches up on the side and terminates two inches to the left on the bottom edge. I'll go another winter of sand blasting before getting it replaced.

We have a great glass guy. When the windshield came in for out 2011 Golf TDi he said the quality was unacceptable and ordered another. Price was high but that is the insurance company's issue.

Actually no, that's your (and everyone else's issue) issue as the inflated costs simply get passed on from the insurance company to you, the end user, via increased premiums.

I understand how it works. All I did was state that the price was high. I have know idea what the price difference would have been elsewhere. Maybe that was the cheapest available, maybe not. All I did was follow the insurance company's rules. I'm not saying in anyway that one should gouge or take advantage of the insurance companies (That was our first claim in 10 years for two drivers), but lets remember that we aren't exactly dealing with saints here. The industry could use some reform.

Safelite has done great work for a few of my cars. In the past my 911 Turbo (2x) for rock chips from track use. Just had them do my 2013 GTR from rock chip and they did a fantastic job. They will quote and try to install non-OEM, but all you have do to is tell them you wan OEM glass. All my windshield replacements have been OEM. Very happy with their work.

Safelite has messed up my 4runner twice trying to put in a windshield. 1400 hundred in paint damage the first time, 1100 the second. It took the 9 months to never resolve the problems (mouldings are still messed up). They installedthe windshield 3 times and its still messed up. Then they screwed up the inlaws expedition, (wish they had told me imcould have saved them the headache) In the meantime a brick came through the windshield of my tundra. Went to binswanger, in 4 hours it was done perfect with no issues. NEVER EVER will I recommend safelite. EVER.

My last windshield was $558.00 and included new moldings. My windshield guy said the moldings should be replaced every other time. Was my second new windshield.

I pay it out of pocket so no insurance claim. I average a new windshield every year or so. Sometimes get away with a couple years between but even if no cracks, it gets pitted and streaks the wipers in the winter rain season.

Down here in the dirty South back in April 2012 I had my windshield replaced in a 2011 LTD, Green Tint w/molding,upper solar, electrochromatic mirror, third visor frit. Practically OEM, but aftermarket, paid $256., installed (no insurance payment). Since then we've been up the East Coast into the NE States, Texas numerous times, not one problem......at all. I'd say look around. A windshield with "HUD" in my Corvette didn't cost me $1100. dollars.

No heater elements though? When it is -20 and snowing, those little heaters are worth their weight in platinum. Probably not so much of an issue in Mississippi.

I paid about $550 for aftermarket glass with heater elements and everything else. The black paint areas aren't as good as OEM, but the OEM glass was an extra $200.

Valid point, hell, it's so hot down here I completely forgot about the heating element in the windshield, but, was asked about it at replacement, and told them no, but I have to emphasize, for the price I paid, I have had no issues at all with it.

I got a rock chip in two weeks and less than 2,000 miles on the odometer. The factory glass is made in Taiwan. I asked for PGW glass, after it was installed, I looked up the DOT number (583, if I remember right) and it's made in CHINA :ybrick: I used Deep Ellum Auto Glass in downtown Dallas because they are so well reviewed on Yelp.

I had my windshield replaced yesterday with PGW glass. Only difference that I am uncertain of is if the third visor comes down a bit more on the OEM vs PGW. I put it off for 2 months as I was nervous as hell after reading some of the stories here on scratched paint, bunged up trim, etc. So far so good not 100% sure on wind noise but I'll be keeping an ear out.

With $250 deductible OEM would have cost me $500 out of pocket vs just $250 on the PGW.
