Windshield Washer Nozzle Adjustment

Does anyone have any experience with adjusting the windshield washer spray nozzles? I've heard that they can be adjusted by inserting a pin and moving the nozzle, but don't know if that is for all vehicles.

Guess I could just try it, and probably will if I can find a pin.

It seems as though there is not enough back pressure, creating a larger stream that doesn't fly as far up the windshield.

Sorry I can't help you with the adjustment, but when I cleaned out my nozzles they went back to spraying the full strength stream up near the top of the window.

How did you clean the nozzles out? Toothbrush? Detergent flush?

These flow like a garden hose without anything on the end to cause a spray.

I used the edge of a small razor knife to scrape the wax out of it from the previous owner and then finished it off with a cotton cloth and window cleaner. I little sewing needle would probably work better to get a deeper in the nozzle itself. However you may want to check the lines for any leaks if they are all flowing like a water hose as you mentioned.

Never tried on the 4Runner, but using a needle and pushing the needle in the direction you want the jets to be adjusted works. It's a real PITA because it took many tries and many tanks of washer fluid to get the jets to spray water where it's needed. For awhile it was spraying up and over the car and going up the second floor window (when the car was parked on the driveway). I have it adjusted on my other car to spray a bit higher, so even at 75-80mph it will still spray lower 1/3rd of the windshield instead of just above the wipers leaving the top of the windshield dry.

The service manual gives a warning about not using a safety pin, etc... to clean or adjust because the nozzle tip is plastic/resin. Don't use metal, use a plastic/resin brush. I've used a toothpick in the past. It also gives a diagram of the specs where the spray pattern should hit but doesn't say how to adjust it.

WOW!!! Toyota really covers everything. I wonder why they didn't use the "spray" pattern nozzle over the "three streams" nozzle. My Camry and Taco has the "spray" pattern nozzles and those seem to have better coverage than the streams. Haven't observed how the "spray" pattern works at higher speeds.

Tried to adjust my wife's 04 4R rear washer with a pin but couldn't get it to move so had the dealer do it. I asked how to adjust them and he said of them you can adjust yourself and some you can't. I cleaned them out with a safety pin but couldn't get them to move by using the needle. How does anyone get these to move? I only bent the safety pin when I tried.

I use a toothpick.

Or better yet, you can use one of those plastic tooth pics that only old people use... Nasty..

J/K on the old part, but get a toothpick and move the invididual nozzles in a circular pattern. There should be 3 small nozzles per side.

Don't wedge it, just rotate it.
