Woody's '01 Build/Trip Thread

I have a pretty busy life and usually only skulk around on here if I even get on at all. I've made a lot of progress on my first build in the last year though, and figured I should start my own thread.

Here's what my third 3rd gen (Judy III) looked like when I first got her at 183K in June 2016:

<a href="https://ibb.co/i55KnA"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/dg1s7A/Screenshot-2016-06-22-19-11-15.png" alt="Screenshot-2016-06-22-19-11-15" border="0"></a>

Pretty clean, regular service, timing belt and water pump done at 153k.

Current (199K):

<a href="https://ibb.co/hHYx7A"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/kF160V/20181003-190442.jpg" alt="20181003-190442" border="0"></a>

First thing I did was remove the running boards, build a storage compartment, and install a CB radio. You'll have to excuse me for not having more pictures, I went through a few phones in this period and didn't document everything.

<a href="https://ibb.co/duRvuq"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/jheFuq/20181119-162124.jpg" alt="20181119-162124" border="0"></a>
<a href="https://ibb.co/insDfV"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/bDM60V/20181119-162047.jpg" alt="20181119-162047" border="0"></a>

Put a 3" Toytec lift, 1" BL, and 1.25" Spidertax wheel spacers on along with new SPC UCAs, and 285/75R16 General Grabber AT2s on 2007 TRD FJ Cruiser wheels. That also came with new, extended sway bar end links and OEM LBJs.
At this point I went to my first Overland Expo East in Ashville, NC to meet up with some forum friends.
Up next was putting on a CBI swing away bumper with my dad, and a Shrockworks front bumper with a Warn 9500 with a forum friend near me.

<a href="https://ibb.co/dDnJEq"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/ft6pLV/20170514-132229.jpg" alt="20170514-132229" border="0"></a>

The next occurrence was not an enjoyable one...

<a href="https://ibb.co/kSC77A"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/jeBdEq/20170521-155116.jpg" alt="20170521-155116" border="0"></a>
<a href="https://ibb.co/fvdQuq"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/gSEyEq/20170521-154710.jpg" alt="20170521-154710" border="0"></a>

Driving home one night after looking at a Jeep Comanche with a friend, it suddenly sounded like a washing machine full of rocks started up under me. The inside of the trans looked like a grenade went off. Not a fun experience pulling the trans out either I discovered.

Then the fun stuff, started taking her out.

<a href="https://ibb.co/e4U9LV"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/cXub0V/20180120-114738.jpg" alt="20180120-114738" border="0"></a>
<a href="https://ibb.co/ip60SA"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/cQ1ZnA/20180615-181039.jpg" alt="20180615-181039" border="0"></a>
<a href="https://ibb.co/hKrBZq"><img src="https://image.ibb.co/kdjWZq/25287.jpg" alt="25287" border="0"></a>
<a href="https://ibb.co/jMXJEq"><img src="https://image.ibb.co/heV5uq/25288.jpg" alt="25288" border="0"></a>

The next upgrade was welding some Shrockworks rocksliders on.

<a href="https://ibb.co/jTsw0V"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/kEAifV/20180818-160647.jpg" alt="20180818-160647" border="0"></a>

That was pretty fun. I don't get many welding opportunities.

Next was KC ditch lights and spraying the hood down with Rustoleum plastidip to cut down glare.

<a href="https://ibb.co/cC0c7A"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/c4HeLV/20181117-202506.jpg" alt="20181117-202506" border="0"></a>
<a href="https://ibb.co/jQsqSA"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/k3SeLV/20181117-202515.jpg" alt="20181117-202515" border="0"></a>

And took her out again...

<a href="https://ibb.co/fSyEnA"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/h7Hkuq/29332.jpg" alt="29332" border="0"></a>
<a href="https://ibb.co/fQeLSA"><img src="https://preview.ibb.co/jkGOfV/29330.jpg" alt="29330" border="0"></a>

More to come. Enjoy.

Took the Runner to the dealership a couple weeks ago because I was leaking power steering fluid. Took me a while to convince them that I had self diagnosed the issue, but got them to order a new power steering line (couldn't find it cheaper online), and they did the install while I was at work. Fast forward to replacing the spark plugs, wires, and belts and I noticed this. This is one of the bolts that holds the power steering pump.

It was my first time dealing with this dealership (or any dealership). I don't know if they're reputable or not, but I'll have to pay closer attention if I go back in the future.

A couple early Christmas presents to myself: TRD badge, radiator cap, and oil cap. Because why not? Gotta be at least 15HP right there...

<a href="https://ibb.co/hcK7c63"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/3v0rv3g/20181224-073116.jpg" alt="20181224-073116" border="0"></a>

Ignore the dirty engine. That's a project for another day.

I also got the KC HiLiTES 519 LED Backup Flood Light System which I'll probably wait to install until after Christmas. Unless I can sneak away for a couple hours today.

Well I successfully snuck away long enough to install the KC reverse lights. Turned out pretty well, they're nice and bright. Installed the switch right under the KC ditch light switch. I just wished they matched...

And here's what the CB setup looks like. Complete with magnetic phone holder and Bluetooth speaker for music and hula girl.

Also, here's a shot of how I have my sleeping area set up. I went to a foam shop and got two different thicknesses of foam in rough blocks and cut them to shape. 8" foam to cover the distance from the back of the folded down seats to the top of the cargo drawers, and 3" foam as a nearly twin sized mattress. All in all, pretty comfortable (of course I have to sleep at an angle to fit).

And it rolls up out of the way when not in use thanks to some straps from my college days.

Here are a lot of pictures from the annual Northern Virginia winter trip to Flagpole Knob. First time doing it, or any large T4R meet for that matter. Had a good time, but unfortunately the trans got pretty hot and had to leave Judy III on the side of the trail for a little while to cool off. I hopped into a 5th gen to keep going to the top and came back to pick her up. Started up no problem after that and continued to camp to spend the night before heading back up home this morning. Looks like I'm going to have to add my trans cooler now!
I also rolled over 195k on the way down.

Airing down

Here's a shot of everyone at the gas station this morning before I headed out. Ignore the red Nissan Frontier, he obviously didn't get the memo we were coming.

Took a video of that little washout from my first post. It's crazy how steep angles look from in the cab vs. outside the truck. My levoguage had me at 30 degrees when I asked about my tilt...

And a couple stills

Not sure if everyone can see the vid, but this format seems to work fine:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LG5etlV2nvQ" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Tried to edit the last post, but I guess that option doesn't exist anymore and I've spent 5-6 minutes trying to reload this page. Only this site seems to be affected so I'll try and edit later maybe.

johnbyebye Thanks! I love the look of them and they work great for me.
Collkid Thanks! I do for now but when I move in a few months I'll get a designated DD.

Found some older pictures in the cloud that I had thought I lost.

When I still had 2 4Runners before I sold the '00 Desert Dune Pearl:

Before any bumpers. Just the lift:

And before the front bumper install. No bumper or grill:

What build thread is complete without a puddle splash shot?
I'm getting ready to move, and once there I'm going to start the process of SASing Judy. So I've been taking it easy in the mean time. Did just roll over 198k..

Thinking of making a difficult decision.
The boot's been torn on my passenger side CV for a while, the charcoal filter is bad, there's a lot of rust on the frame/bolts, I replaced the power steering lines not too long ago, and my master cylinder just started leaking.
To make things worse, I'm about to move 11.5 hours across the mountains and I don't really trust the 4Runner on the highway.. Definitely not that long and with my all belongings in it. So now I'm debating putting it on a trailer or shipping it. Either way, the costs are getting up there, and so is the mileage/age/rust. Just wondering: when is it not worth it anymore? I love this truck, but I don't make very much and resale value just goes down. Suggestions? Maybe time to part ways? Sell/trade?

Here's the leak when I first noticed it. It's pretty sizeable, and you can see the rust, too.

Just picked Judy up, she's running great and stops better than ever..... for a cool $3500... new master cylinder and accumulator.
For those curious, the codes were: c1201 (eng. control syst.), c1223 (abs control syst. malfunction), c1224 (open or short in NE signal), c1246 (master cyld. press. sensor), and c1256 (accumulator low press.)

On the plus side, everyone at this Toyota likes my truck, says the paint looks good, and was impressed that all the fluids were good
