Worth it?

97' 4Runner with 270K. $1700. Broken timing belt, otherwise looks pretty clean. 2 new tires, diff lock. Owner says everything works:

I think there is money there. I wouldn't say it's super clean. The interior looks pretty good, the exterior however not so much. Peeling paint, beat up bumper, I'm willing to bet the clear coat is peeling on top.
But that being said you could probably buy it for $1500, have it towed to a shop. Pay them, let's say $1200 for timing belt, water pump, tow, and unexpected items. Get it detailed for $200. You'd then be in it $2900 without much effort on your part. Put it back on ksl for $4995. I'll bet it would sell quick. $2100 fairly easy money.

buy it and do the timing belt yourself save even more $$. it is a non interference motor so you are lucky

I would fix it myself. Throw a belt on and see if it even ran, then change the WP and other items.

It has a rebuilt title. KBB in good condition is $3000

If you're looking to flip it the title status will ruin that. If you're looking to drive it, buy it and fix it. I bought my 98 as a salvage title from hail damage. I love this thing!

Seller says he bought it, put 2 new tires on it, drove it home and the timing belt broke. His mechanic recommended a used engine or at minimum a top end rebuild. Not sure why. There is only surface rust underneath. Really clean truck. Salvage title was given over 10 years ago.

Don't listen to that. For a vehicle that old the title status would be pretty nominal.

That is kind of a weird recommendation to rebuild the top end.

Go for it, at the worst it is a parts car that becomes a fiscal push in the end.

I have the exact same truck. Same year, trim and color even. 410,000 on original engine and tranny and runs like a champ. So there might be some serious life left in that truck.

I would be all over this. Just parting out the truck can make you some money, if you have time.

The 5vz is a non interference engine, so slap a new belt on it and I bet it'll have plenty of life left in it.

Money to be made for sure, but not a whole lot, depends how proficient you are with a wrench, to some people a timing belt and retiming the motor is a day or two job, some people take weeks.

Well, drove 2 hours one way to look at this truck. Wouldn't turn over. Put my 3/8" drive ratchet and a 19 mm socket on the crank and the crank pulley bolt was loose. I was tightening it. Tightened it up all the way, couldn't get it to move. Pulled the timing cover to find a good looking timing belt. Still had writing on it "R CAM". Tried to turn the engine backward, only would move 1/3 of a turn. Suspect a bad crankshaft/connecting rod. My thought is that someone didn't tighten the crank pulley all the way, or even close to 217 ft lbs, which brought catastrophic failure to the engine. No thrown rod through the block. Oil is nearly full, nice golden brown.

Cap, rod, etc, take your pick for one or more being the culprit to the death of the engine.

His mechanic honestly thought it was the timing belt, also thought it was an interference motor because it is a V6. Both wrong.

Exactly what I said. The owner was telling me that the mechanic is a backyard type. He mentioned that they talked about doing an engine, I told him to not have that mechanic do it because he probably doesn't know a piston from his sister's titty. - Reference to U571.
