Would you buy a 5th Gen that was once a Rental Vehicle?

I will say this. I bought my 2010 in Dec 2010 at 9months old and 20k miles. It was a lease or rental. I bought Toyota care to 100k warranty. I have 78k now and it has never been in for a repair. Also been one of the best Vehicles I have ever owned. If you are concerned, go for the extended warranty and have that piece of mind.

Of course any relatively new vehicle is going to be robust enough to not exhibit major mechanical issues right off the bat, even after having been "abused"; but do you really want to deal with all the little stuff that's wrong/messed up?

Have you ever noticed almost every time you rent a car from any major rental company it's practically brand new and low miles? I'm sure there's a reason why rental companies rotate out used vehicles so frequently, and I doubt it is for the benefit of the customer. If they're off loading them so fast, you have to wonder why and what's wrong with them if they are "perfectly fine".

Your experience is like that of the majority of rental buyers. Buying a rental is no more of a crapshoot as any non-rental.

I bought a 2009 Nissan Altima that was originally a rental. I had it for two years. Never had a problem with it.

That said, test drive it and go with your gut.

Exactly what I hear from other rental buyers.

I was going to ask where y'all are renting 4Runners from thinking you went to Enterprise or Budget picking them up. But apparently Toyota does a "Toyota Rent a Car" with a bunch of their vehicles at select dealers.

I rented one through Avis I believe. My wife and I took a trip to Montana to go snow boarding. I was not going to risk flying 2k miles away to be stuck in our place because we couldn't get out if it snowed. So I made sure the vehicle I rented was gonna be a 4x. And they had a group of 5th Gen's that they rented.

I'd confirm it was an actual rental car, on reports rentals are often lease cars as well. If it looks clean, passes a PPI, I'd say why not?

Just do a PPI...if it checks out and is to your satisfaction when you look at it then go for it. People talk a big game about romping on rentals but I doubt it really happens that often.

I'd do it if the price is right. I've owned a couple of ex-rentals in the past (Subaru and Toyota), and never had any problems with them - even well beyond 100,000 miles.

Rentals are driven by idiots once in a while, but many of the used vehicles out there were driven by idiots EVERY DAY. And it used to be true that rental vehicles were maintained better than most privately owned vehicles, though these days you can verify that with Carfax.

1. I would not buy a rental vehicle for all the reasons that various members have posted. 2. Why don't you look for a new 2013 for a couple thousand more? I'm sure you can find a leftover on the lot that the dealership is trying to get rid of for cheap.

Let's see, you start off by reinforcing the fact that there's nothing wrong with buying a rental, and that mostly sane people drive it even more carefully than their own cars, and that the forum is just blowing it way out of proportion.

Then you dive right into the fact that you wouldn't buy it because there could be driveline damage and how that it goes through too much daily abuse and it would end up looking like and/or feeling like a piece of junk. Yep sure sounds like those sane people really are treating the rentals better and more gingerly than their own vehicles!

Anyways, not going to bother arguing with you since you only seem to have a bone to pick with people here instead of actually contributing to a debate/discussion like a grown adult :hatsoff:

I'd trust a rental before I would trust a lease or a used car.

Rentals get maintained VERY well. The rental companies don't want the car breaking down on the customer, which then costs THEM money. Same goes for cleanliness. Every rental car is detailed upon return, cleaned inside and out. Makes for some of the best looking used cars out there. Main reason they get rid of them when they are still relatively new? TO AVOID BREAKDOWNS! Again, if you are renting a car you expect a brand new car. No one renting from a major company is expecting some half-cocked 1995 Camry with 200k and none of the features of modern cars.

And whomever said 16k is talking out their behind. The rental I am in right now (truck is in body shop) just rolled 23,000 miles. I think the car is plastic junk, but the car is super super clean. Hell, my ex-girlfriends car has less than 10,000 miles (2013 Corolla S) and is beat to hell. And if you bring the rental back damaged, or scratched, or super dirty they charge you an extra $100. I would trust a rental any day of the week.

Where the vehicle was a rental makes a big difference in what features were used as well. If buy one that was a rental in Florida for example, chances are 4WD was never used or abused.

food stains has nothing to do with reliability nor how it was driven. and engaging 4wd at the wrong time is not the same as engaging the windshield wipers without rain.

My wife wants one with leather and it kills me I have a red and white one down the street from me both with leather, and the dealership won't deal. They know it is a special order option for navi and leather and are holding out I guess. Time will tell I guess.

Rental Purchase

A good friend of mine is a retired fleet manager for a major rental agency and he has told me some horror stories about in shop maintenance at the facilities and I would not take one for free, if I had to keep and maintain it.

Wow that's surprising that they won't deal. While I didn't get the leather on my Runner, I got @4k off of sticker when I got my 2011.

Nope never. I rent from national and Avis enough to be in their frequent flyer program. A new rental even with 1k miles starts to feel a bit loose in my hands. Japanese and Korean cars seem to fare better but American and German cars? Fall off cliff.
