Would you consider the V8 4runner the best ever

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I just said. You'd be a lot more fun to argue with if you knew how to read for comprehension.

And no, sorry, your stock 4th gen with an average driver won't hang 5 minutes with a stock 1st with an average driver on any real trail, solid axle or not. It's wider and it's lower, and when you're actually wheeling those things matter a lot. I'm sure it's different when you're just thrashing your Chevy around in a mud pit.

But you went and played that game anyways, and I did a lot more than just thrash my Chevy around in a mud pit. Show me a real trail that a stock 4th gen 100% flat out wont hang 5 minutes on. I don't believe you, you're just being biased and semi trolling a 4th gen thread.

All I know is last time I went off-roading with some older gens, you guys needed my V8 to pull 2 trucks at once that got stuck! LoL

Teasing aside, a stock 4th gen makes a lot more noise off-roading than a stock 3rd or older (meaning it scrapes and rubs the frame and stuff on rocks and such) I wheeled my 4th gen with just a SW bumper for a couple times, did good for mostly stock... but I lost the running boards first time out (oh well. I knew it was gonna happen anyways lol)

My first rig was a short box Toyota 1985 4x4 truck (same as, probably better than an '85 t4r for 4x4) and it was good in the mountains, but I think the 4 wheel drive system in my 2004 v8 does a better job in the mountains - in snow and ice - where I'm at in Montana anyway.

Not to mention that the high center of gravity and light weight made the '85 squirrelly. Yup, that back end liked to kick out all the time in the '85... did loop de loops on the highway a few times and ended up in the ditch (not fun). Rolled the '85 after a short trip on a snowy road once - a spooky rig at times.

Loved that '85 truck for its looks and reliability, but no way would I ever want to go back. Or forward for that matter - bought the wife a 2012 LE and (MUCH) prefer the 2004 v8.

For me the 4th gen v8 is the best - in my opinion.

You can't bring in aftermarket mods like an SAS or ARB locker, or you've rendered the discussion meaningless. You add a locker to your 4th gen, I'll put dual cases on my '85. You swap to a solid axle, I'll spend the same money on a link suspension. We can play that game all day, and you'll never catch up. I get a lot more bang for my modding buck on the 1st gen than you'll ever see with your 4th.

But that's entirely beside the point. The fact is the 4th gen in stock form doesn't hold a candle to any of the earlier generations in terms of all-round utility - it's bigger, and it's heavier, and it's lower than anything that came before it. Is the 4th gen a great truck? Absolutely, and I'm not here to insult anybody's truck. But to claim that your V8 makes the 4th gen "the best 4Runner ever" is just silly. For what you guys paid for your 4th gen's, I'll buy a first gen, mod the hell out of it, and I'll have enough left over to buy a real tow rig and a trailer too.

If "room, comfort, and towing capacity" are how we're evaluating 4Runners these days, then the Tundra is the best 4Runner ever .

Your basis for the 85 is based pretty much on off road capability from what your saying and I'm understanding. I agree that a stock for stock comparison is legit. But your basing it solely on the things the 1st gen IS better at. I will agree with what you say because its true. But the gap on off road prowess the 1st gens have over the 4th gens is not that wide. On the other hand the things the 4th gen IS better at than the 1st gen, the gap is wider. By what you state on "ID get a Tundra" would be like me saying I'd get a Rubicon.. And cost is out the door if it's stock for stock. Prices then aren't the same as prices now.

LOL at the 1st gen comments. How can trucks that literally rusted off the frames, rode like tobacco wagons, and had absolutely zero power even be in the discussion of "best SUV ever"? This isn't "most capable offroad"...this is "best ever" and the 1st and 2nd gen 4Rs don't even remotely qualify. Those rides were primative at best.

For best ever, you have to consider the ENTIRE package. And that's why I say the 4th gen V8 is a strong candidate. It has plenty of power, something previous Toyotas never had. It has excellent ride quality. It has excellent build quality with much higher rust protection than before. It has much better safety. It can tow and haul a lot more. And it still retains great offroad ability with a ladder frame and low range. If you look at the entire package, the 4th gen blows away everything else in it's category of the same or older vintage.

op2: SMH... Post a subjective question and get a subjective answer.

Let's just agree that whatever you drive is the best of all time. That's why it's your vehicle. Otherwise you'd be driving something else. I've personally always been partial to the 3rd Gen's for looks and ground clearance. And as mentioned, SAS's, SC'd 3rd's are drool worthy. When I bought mine, the 3rds were older so I thought I'd give a 4th a shot. The fact that it came with a V8 was "bacon on my cheeseburger"! Love my 4th, and a SAS'd, Locked, SC'd V8, dual cased, etc. 4th gen is as drool worthy as the modded 3rd. You're just all gonna have to agree to disagree on subjective questions as to what you feel is the "best ever". Everyone uses their vehicles for there own purposes, be it wheeling, towing, people moving, mall crawling, racing, soccer momming, etc. There's no such vehicle that is "best" for everyones needs. Just be glad you drive a 4Runner. :cheers:

Wow...this is a debate, not a pissing match so lets keep it to facts and save the slander for another thread. I didn't realize there was that much hate against the other gens...christ were all on the same team here.
