I'm having a dilemma guys and hopefully you can help. I currently I have a 03 galactic grey SR5 V8 4runner with 75,ooo miles. Yup,you read that right, 75k miles. I bought it from my dad who was the original owner. Once I bought my dad's 4th gen he bought a new 2015 5th gen barcelona red limited. He currently has a whopping 13k miles on his limited and wants to sell it to me for 31K.

1. Would you sell the low mile 4th gen V8 and buy his 5th gen almost new limited?

OR

2. Keep the 4th gen?

Do you honestly think the 5th gen section will tell you to get the V8 4th gen? That V8 is literally the bane of every 5th gen's existence.
 
BOTH!

I would turn that V8 into a trail rig optimized for function rather than instagram and I would use the Limited as a daily driver if the cargo area is really used.

If a smaller cargo area is fine, I would do as said with the V8 (since it is owned already) and get a 2020 XT Outback that will blow the Limited on road and dirt alike :)
 
The 5th gen has better crash protection and better airbags. Market value on the 4th with low miles should definitely be of value to someone.

No kidding. I intended to keep my 95 Legacy wagon till 2015 but I replaced it in Dec 2012 as we have far too many mid-speed crashes here and I got worried.

That's why I would put the 2004 in the trail rig category rather than in the DD category.
 
It is a tough call. Owning outright has its advantages. I have a 19 SR5P and had an 03 Limited. I really miss the V8 and the quality of the plastics in the 19 interior are a downgrade from my 03. On the other hand, I prefer the exterior styling of the 19 gen 5 to the first year gen 4.

Unbelievable you have the same galactic gray 03 4runner with about the same miles that I traded in on my Barcelona red limited in 2014. If it were not for the transfer case actuator leaking bad ($2500 fix) and the speedometer not working most of the time I would probably have kept it. I just decided that with the good offer my dealer gave me and the fact that other than routine maintenance it never cost me anything. I thought I would just start fresh before it started to nickel and dime me to death. After 5 years in my 5th gen I can say it is better in most every way except I still miss the V8 badly.
 
I really like the V8 in the GX. If it's a DD and I had a long commute I'd go with the V6. Even with mods it's way more efficient than the V8.
 
For me this is super simple because I'm frugal. Why would you spend $31,000 on a new used vehicle when you already have a perfectly good low mileage vehicle? What, is a car payment something you put on your Christmas list every year?
 
Sometimes it's nice to have a choice. I own a 4th and a 5th gen....and enjoy driving them both!!! The '05 is my work-horse, hauler, off-roader, winter machine.....while the '17 is primarily used during the summers as a commuter and for road trips. IMO, I got the bet of both worlds!

Not really my 16 rolling on 285's gets 12-13 in the city 15-16 highway.

My 03 V8 with TRD Super charger gets 16 in the city and 17-18 highway.

The 5th gen is a dime a dozen, plenty more where those came from. Now your V8 is a rare survivor. Get some DT headers and a Borla exhaust and live the V8 dream. Drive a rig that rips.

I picked up my 70's something parents at the airport and ended up at a light next to some guy in a challenger, his rig just out of the car wash, windows down jamming music. I matched him off the line and pulled him when he lost traction. He had a hard time with a 4runner with a rocket box on the roof and 2 grey hairs looking out the window at him as we pulled away from him.
 
I traded in my 08 4th gen for a 2017, however I always owned the V6. If you like the V8 or need it to tow stuff I'd keep the V8. If you want something more up to date do the 5th gen

This is pretty amazing! Even down to the year and color of our 4runners.
 
Those of you who've owned previous generation 4runners and now own a 5th gen do you think the new ones are built as well as the older 4runners?
