So ive been building my 4runner over the past few years and along the way I swapped a 96 T case into my 02... Well some of the electronics didnt match up but the T case functions perfectly. One of the plugs was for my Speedo sensor which throws a P0500 code or something like that and doesnt allow my speedometer to function. This code will not allow my 4runner to pass smog in CA. As this is more my rock crawler trail rig than a daily driver the speedo didnt bother me since I mostly only drive it on the road to and from trails. Well it came time to pass smog and knowing this I researched what my options were.
A) change my T case to the correct year
B) drill out the current 96 T case and adapt it to fit the sensor (there is a kit online somewhere with all the wires, etc for around $200)
C) eff the system
So I drove my 4runner for 6 months past the registration date and was pulled over by Local PD. He said he had seen me drive by before and was waiting for my registration to pass the 6 months so he could legally tow it, what a dick. He was playing good cop bad cop by himself so he didnt tow me but made me walk to the DMV (down the street) to get a 1 day opp sticker or registration.
I walked into the DMV and had already considered all my options. Being so close to NV I thought I could get a 1 day opp sticker then later register it in Nevada if they would not give me registration that day. At the DMV here there is only 1 man that works along side all the women who are less than helpful so I was really hoping he would be the one to call me up. Sure enough when my number was called it was him. I had read up on County Smog Laws in my area and that Nevada County requires annual smog but Placer County does not. I walked up and said "I would like to change my address and pay my registration fees today please" I changed my address to a friends house in Placer County with his PO Box as the mailing address, paid my fees and he handed me a registration sticker right there!
Happy to be done with all the CA smog crap and hope to not need a smog anytime soon as the car is now registered in a non smog county. Hope this helps someone else with a similar issue!
