Wrangler MT/r

Has anyone put MT/r's on their 4runner? Any thoughts on the setup? I get 35% off them and was looking at a set after the new year. I know KO2's are really popular and didn't know why.

No experience with the MTR/K on the 4R, but I've been running them on my Jeep for several years. Great off road tire. I air them down to ~4 psi and they stick. They're not the best in mud, which is ok because I stick to the rocks. My Jeep is primarily off road, with some occasional city driving. I only have ~15k miles on them and they still have a lot of life left.

I had a set of 37x12.5r17s on my 2013 Rubicon 10A. They were a great tire; however, I found that tread life was fairly short in comparison to KO2s. As far as sound levels go, they were actually quieter than the stock Mud Terrains, but you should expect the sound to increase as the miles build up.

I️ run them on my 3rd gen. I️ love them! However my 4RNR isn’t a daily driver. They started off pretty quite for a mt tire but with 12k on them have become louder. They still have a lot of meat though. Here in the Rocky Mountain they are awesome. They stick so well on trails I️ am still surprised what you can throw at them. They don’t get sliced up on the shale we have here. Can’t say that for a set of ko2’s I️ used to have.
They don’t compare at all to K02’s. Completely different type of tires. The ko2 will be a lot quieter but won’t offer nearly as much off-road capability than the mt/r. Typical at vs mt benefits and cons. I️ will say I️ probably wouldn’t put the mtr on a daily driver. Well, maybe when I️ was in my 20’s I️ would have...

PM STX4Runner...I think he still runs 275/70 MT/Rs.

Done, thanks

Yeah, my biggest motivator over the KO2's is they are cheaper and, well, perhaps I should run tires for a company I work for. Guys at the factory get upset if we buy competitors. Not as much anymore as we don't make passenger tires at union plants. Most of them now come from overseas or the scab plant in Lawton.

About to install my 4th set of MTR/Ks. I like them. I'm assuming you are talking about the MTR/K, as the original MT and MTRs are long gone, other than the 37"x12.5x16.5 for the HUMVEE, or they are a Treadright re-tread.

Pros: Tough as hell. 1 puncture in 3 sets vs many punctures in every single tire I ran previously. Only tire I've used that didn't have lots of completely missing tread blocks after 50% tread life (chunking). Decent tread life (44k miles on my current set), if you keep them rotated and balanced. They are true to size and fairly light weight for what they are.

Cons: They are not quiet on some surfaces, especially when worn out and cupped. They are completely worthless on packed snow/ice. They require frequent balance and rotation or get cupped and miserable to ride on.

They have a very stiff sidewall with the corresponding ride quality and require lower air pressure than other tires when aired down.

Yeah. I answered his questions in the PM but will repeat here for anyone else. First, I agree with everything Jeremy556 says. I'm still on my first set, not 4th, but I'll get them again. They've worn great. I have over 30K on this set and they still have good tread depth left. You do have to rotate them every 3 - 5K and they can be a bear to balance. I had to make Discount Tire take back two originally after they just would not balance after the first rotation. But they're awesome off-road. I wheel 100% in rocks (Texas and Utah) and they've never torn off lugs. My old BFG ATs (old pattern, not the revised edition) lost lugs after one trail run on my first trip to Moab. They're getting loud, but IDGAF because of all the upside. I didn't get them for their quiet ride, super long tread life or road manners.

Edit, addition. I have no comment on them re. snow and ice for obvious reasons, but I will say they resist hydroplaning FAR better than my old BFG ATs. Those things were like water skis.

I have 13k miles on my 285 mtr/k with a lot of offroad in NM and Moab. It is only an offroad toy until Feb when my son turns 16. No complaints. I did cut a sidewall in Moab but have still been running it. Tires are chunked some but not whole lugs. I think I am going to pick up some new wheels with A/T tires for him to daily on and swap when we take an offroad trip.

You're comparing an all terrain to a mud terrain. Of course there is a vast difference in tread wear life.

I would agree with every bit of this. I loved the MTR/Ks that I just came off of my truck. They had great bite in every condition that I had them in. I did have a few missing tread blocks through. I took them off with 48K on them, and could probably stretch them a little further.

I was guilty of not keeping up with strict balance and rotation every 3K though, and I paid for it. There in the last 10K with them, they rode like dry rotted tractor tires, and were screaming loud. I would air them down to 10psi regularly and never burped a bit of air or busted a bead.

I planned to run them again in a 35, but I got too good of a deal on my Coopers that I changed over. They've been good so far, but I still prefer the MTRs.
