Hey guys,

my gear shifting problems couldn’t been solved: 3rd gear is not working at all.

Therefore I need some advice on which option to choose:

1)
Repair in the workshop based on the following offer:
- 4-5 hours: pull transmission out and have a look what’s wrong
- min 4 hours to repair current transmission
OR
buy reconditioned transmission for AU$850
- 4 hours: put transmission back in.

Total of min. 12 for AU$100 / hour + material

Is the proposed time realistic or would I get ripped of accepting the offer?
How hard would it be to pull it out by myself?
I only got ramps, a couple of tools and two technically skilled friends (I am also quite handy as well).

2)
Give car to a wrecker who might be interested in the parts - car got almost new tyres and new clutch 6 month ago.

3)
Sell to somebody interested in the car / repairing on its own.

Tech Specs
391 000 km
2.4L Turbo Diesel
LN61

Appreciate any suggestion to choose the most economic solution.

The cheapest solution would be a junkyard transmission. If you don't want to risk that, I'd buy the recon'd tranny and swap it out yourself with your buddies. I'd rent a transmission jack to make it easy, but the manual trans aren't super heavy.

X2 I would replace the tranny myself. I've had the tranny out of my 3rd gen. I can't imagine a 1st gen being any more difficult than that.

IMHO, 4-5 hours to pull it out is BULL S***, 4 hours to put it back in is BULL S***. Those times may be more accurate for an inexperienced mechanic, but a professional garage that is ridiculous. It took me half that time to pull my tranny, replace the clutch and put the tranny back.

Thanks guys! :bravo:
Motivated by your input I took a detailed look at how to pull it out and feel quite confident about that - especially with a transmission jack.

Are there any good write-ups for a 1st runner?
(Have only found newer ones so far)

How do I figure out which transmission model is installed in my Runner?
Could it be a G52, G54 or W52?

Any Aussie here who could recommend where to get replacement parts for the tranny
I'll give Toyota and Burson a call tomorrow.

Any other parts that I need / should replace at the same time when replacing the synchro (probably)?

I would probably have a look whether only the 3rd gear synchro needs to be replaced and otherwise decide on a used or reconditioned tranny.

Thanks again! :reddance:

No idea on the transmission, we never got diesels over here. Maybe this will help? Toyota Pickup and 4Runner Drivetrain Specifications

The only Aussie regular is Surf89, maybe he'll chime in.

When you drop the trans is a great time to do your clutch and your pilot bearing.

I just did the clutch on my truck a couple months ago and it was really easy to drop the trans. I had the entire job done by myself in a day using just hand tools and a tranny jack. It was pretty basic. Here are the steps I did, not sure how much different yours is since its diesel. But the steps should be fairly similar.

1: Raise vehicle up on jacks unless its lifted. Mines was tall enough so I didnt have to do that.
2:Unbolt front and rear driveshafts.
3:Unbolt starter and set aside.
4:Unbolt clutch slave cylinder (I let mines hang out of the way)
5: Get inside the truck and remove shifter surround and unbolt trans and tcase shifters from the top. (Stuff a rag in the opening of the tcase to keep crap from falling in it)
6:Jack tranny jack up and secure the straps to hold the trans/tcase to jack.
7:Unbolt crossmember
8:lower jack a few inches to have access to the top bolts.
9:unbolt the trans from engine. (Mines had 6 bolts total IIRC)

And thats about it really. Id replace the clutch and pilot bearing while im in there if I were you. I got an aisin clutch kit and it came with the centering tool, pilot bearing, clutch, plate, and the throwout bearing.

Thank you very much guys, especially Sam24th !!:clap2::clap2::clap2:

Currently very busy at work, I´ll keep you updated on my progress!

2.4 turbo diesel?

It's junk man don't waist your time, as a matter of fact just ship to to me and I will scrap it for you, free of charge! :yo:

Ahh dam just jealous, I had to sell my baby a few months ago to do some work on my 3rd gen. ( non diesel) very sad!

Serious though, very easy fix, if you still like driving the truck and you should!!
Then replace it yourself, read up on the steps to do and easy peasy

Good luck!!

hey guys,

just wanted to give you a quick update:
I couldn't do anything in the last week as I was still too busy at work... Will most likely go for the self repair as soon as I have time. Going to work with another car at the moment anyway...

MyHigh, yes 2.4 L Turbo Diesel :)
