Xp, 2.4/800, 1.5 GB Mushkin, 320 Hn HD. I d/l IE 7.0 and checked a new program online. anyway, A/V is locked-will not scan, system Restore shows NO date to fall back to. I can d/l the latest win XP Updates. I can't type in on my online accounts or do mail. I tried McAfee's Stinger, did not find anything. without system Restore, my only chioce is format/reinstall? I already deleted IE7 and a few reboots. Spyware programs run OK. Advanced System Care is not finding anything. ideas?? thanks guys

I did a full install (this P4 is 6-7 yrs old) a couple months ago. It crashes once in a while with blue screen about latest programs problems. so, what is the lastest when you laod most all in at the same time? I have never seen anything change System Restore before. It was not turned off. If it the latest nasty, maybe one of the big companies will have a patch thing for it. too bad. nice little Intel. thanks.
If you think it's a virus, use a second machine to download the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. Create the CD, boot it so it's running a standalone environment and run the scans. http://www.ubcd4win.com/

I will do the "standalone environment" idea by jharris2. The Hiren's boot CD that I recommended last time is also bootable with lots of utilities.
Or any utilities CD that will run in RAMDRIVE, and troubleshoot it from there.
But XP nowadays is really very vulnerable to viruses and worst, MS released patches but XP's core is really obsolete and many malwares have mastered its structure. Even if you have already removed the virus, the system files are already damaged and replaced by mal values such that it will run notoroiusly and a defective XP installation can get infected again very easy.
My plan B is to create a new partition while running a partition bootable disc, and do a manual backup of your important files. Then format, reinstall XP. It will save you time playing hide and seek with the virus( you can do that in 2 hrs)minus headache.
After a fresh OS install in the primary partition, load it with anti-virus and scan your backup partition before accessing.
I stopped using XP recently, Vista is slow and bloated(you can tweak it) but our security in internet transactions is my priority.
The Vista Service pack 2 is behaving good.

Have you checked that system restore is even turned on?
On a machine that old, is the hard drive failing, fans working, installed any new hardware lately. Other than system restore not having any backups, what is your problem? Uninstall the AV and reinstall, I use free Avast and it works well, no virus in several years.

Borgz, wait till you are close to 60 like me. Totally forgot, that CD was within arm's lenth. running a few of the utilities now. Also, A/V got an update and started scanning! nothing found. Updated a couple antispyware and running those now.
JD, I am running Avast on this backup machine, nice A/V, will put it on my other machines as licenses expire.

I have the same problem with my unit,
i cant watch video, login password, view my mail, use search, virus protect not working, cant download and when i log on to msn the by my mail it state the java module is not active.

Today's A/v update now allows me to virus scan. also System Restore is showing a calender and I am rolloing back as we speak. I was not able to open email program so I hope this will work. I checked some things in the beginning like REGSVR32 MSHTMLED.DLL----that succeceded. maybe that helps. more later.
Good news, (wish you could log into my other forum right now). go to start--run type in REGSVR32 MSHTMLED.Dll should be good news after that. next run REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL again good news I hope. last, run REGSVR32 /i MSHTML.DLL (be sure of space after 32) After I did these and a new A/V update, I could run my virus scan, no it didn't find anything. I could also do System Restore and rolled it back to the 13th. After system resore I did the REGSVR again. I am on the machine now. anyquestions, I can give you my email.
