XREAS and 285/70/17s

Ok I have been searching until my eyes have bled with no solid answers. I am looking at picking up an 08 sport and I am looking to fit some 285/70/17 Duratracs with on a set of stock SR5 wheels and some wheel spacers. My question is: I want to retain the XREAS for now (the truck has 17K miles on it) and have some decent offroad capability however nothing crazy. I was looking into a 3/2 or 3/1 similar to what Blairb did (http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/57784-highest-lift-xreas.html) along with FJ springs. I looked at the ARK suspension faq and it looks like 3/2 lift will fit with minor trimming or fender liner relocate. Has anyone accomplished fitting this sized tire with this or similar setup? Do you guys think that I could fit them without cutting the crap out of a fairly new truck (notching etc)?

If the answer is out there, I couldnt find it so dont beat me up too bad :)

Thanks again.. you guys are great!

You may run into issues getting the alignment back into spec if you do fj coils on top of a 3/2 lift. Motor Sport Tech sells 1"spacers, these will give you slightly more compared to the 1.25". They should fit with
Minor trimming. Have you considered a small body lift? I added a 1/2" body lift for a little extra clearance.

The sport I am looking at is a V8 so I am looking at about ~.75"F/1"R lift from just the FJ springs (approximately?), I dont want to max out or over extend the shocks so they should be ok with the FJ springs from what I have read. How much extra spacer lift would I need to clear the 285s with wheel spacers? I havent thought of the body lift yet.. but if it is cheap enough and doesnt affect the ride too bad I would consider it.. would the body lift alleviate trimming and help out alignment adjustability? I want to try to avoid having to get UCAs and all the extras right now but I would really like to get a set of the 285s under it. I hate the tiny tire look it just bugs the crap out of me.

Thanks again =)

With 4" lift, I still get minor rubbing. However, I believe the fender openings are slightly larger on the 06+ models so you may not have any issues. With over 3"suspension lift, you most likely won't be able to get the caster back into spec. So, stick with a 3/2 lift or the Daystar 2.5/1.5 + fj coils. A lot of people clear 285s with just a 3/2 lift and wheel spacers. Again, consider 1" wheel spacers instead of 1.25" as that will have a slight impact. Just do some minor trimming and you should be fine.

You can choose a small body lift and that will help. All this does is give more clearance for tires. The ride will be the same as before. It will not have an affect on the alignment. If you're really concerned about rubbing, I suggest this. My 1/2" body lift was approx $60. If I was doing it over again, I would go 1" minimum. Speaking of, there's a 1.25" body lift for sale in the classifieds section. With a body lift some trimming will still be required, but it should reduce the amount to cut.

I have driven a few V8's in a limited and a sport both had XREAS however, the sport had a MUCH firmer ride which I enjoy. I wonder if that was a spring rate difference? I am just juggling whether or not to go the FJ spring route (if the ride quality benefit is worth it over the sport springs) or to go with a 3/2 and 1/2-1 inch body lift. Either way it sounds like I should be able to clear the 285s.
Thanks for the info!

No way they'll fit. Go for 265. I have 3/2 lift, uca, front bumper, had to remove front mud flaps, cut body mounts, sledge hammer front fender pinch weld and they barely clear.

265's fit stock and only rub when flexed out at least on my truck. i did remove the mud flaps and steps though prior to installing tires.

maybe your wheels are the problem? still new to T4R so idk what back space/off set works best

The mud flaps will need to come off, I hadn't mentioned that here. Every vehicle is different, we all rub indifferent places with similar setups. 285s aren't out of the question, just depends on how much effort you want to put into fitting them. Body mount may be an issue (hasnt been for me) and a body lift won't help there. It will help with fender rubbing though.

Just understand that with a 3/2 lift, it will take some work to get rid of the rubbing. Personally, I love the way they fit the lifted 4runner and wouldn't consider going any smaller, that's just my preference though.

What is the offset on your wheels? Are you running wheel spacers? Just curious.
Thanks

The Duratrac tires are agressive tread pattern and seem to require more room than other tires the same size. I replaced the same size ProComp tires with Duratrac on a Frontier and the Duratrac rubbed a little where the ProComp didnt before.

Another thing I have found, on my 2003 4Runner I installed 275 70 17 Silent Armors and I have a little rubbing on the UCA at tight turns.
I have a 3/1.5 spacer lift and XREAS.

I will need to get offset rims to correct this but for now I can live with it.

ARK, I have never done a body lift before. Does it change the fit of things like the gear shifter or anything else that is indirectly connected to the frame and body?

How complicated is it on the 4Runner? I have a 2003 Limited.

Nothing major for small lifts (1.5" and under). You'll need a steering spacer and radiator drop brackets, that's it. Under 1" doesn't even require that.

Thats good info on the GY SAs, those were another choice on the list. Got any pics of those on your 03?

This is not the best pic to show the tires but I dont have a lot of pics.

I can tell you that the Silent Armors have performed well in snow and ice, they are quiet and they did not kill my gas milage like the Duratrac did.
I liked the Duratrac but I did not get to run them in snow before I sold the truck.

Thanks for the pic. They look pretty meaty. Does anyone offer the 275/70/17 in a prograde? Or is it just the regular for that size?

I had them on stock wheels with spidertrax spacers and then with 2011 fj wheels with no spacers. I get less rubbing with the fj wheels.

Here's the tire hitting the body mount. Had to cut them with an angle grinder.

Your rig looks awesome. What are your settings at height-wise? Eventually I want to do a coilover setup but initially, I want to try and make the tires work with a 3/2 lift, leaving the xreas in place for now. Were you out of camber/caster adjustment without the UCAs?

Camber was in but on the limit. Coil overs are cranked to max recommended from icon. It's 3/2 but I don't know how much higher than stock it is, the bumper and winch squash it down a bit.

I hated the xreas, the icons ride so much better. Save money in the long run, and just jump on the coil overs. Why waste money money on spacers if they're only temporary?
