Xtreme offraoding in a 3rd gen

I'm not sure of Your experience. Honing your skills in an unlocked rig is very important. I'll make it thru most obstacles unlocked. Only after the need to lock, I do. I'm only locked in back, ARB. I do want a crawl box mated to my manual trans. Personally I like the length of my 3rd gen. I feel pretty confident that I'm not going to lift the front wheels and go over backward. I do wise that there was tail overhang. Just have to lift it higher and minimize the rear bumper and make it from strong steel, you are going to drag it.

Things needed for extreme crawling:
Skill
Armor
Lift

Well said.

with a set of lockers and sliders and 35s anything is possible lol i ALMOST made through fordyce with my current setup and fordyce is harder than rubicon

Brian2sun, I liked your reply

brian2sun, well said, I really get the the experience part, I'm learning, I can literally wheel from my housing track, I've got mountains and desert all around me, my Runner's been fun to mod and even more fun to wheel, I'm thinking about adding a ARB air locker, maybe even do front and rear but it might be stupid to drop $3+K more into my rig.

Sounds like locking one end might be the way to go

Question: which end?

You might want to wait to toss a locker in until you know what gearing you are planning to run.. no need to pay installation twice.. Then I would still do the rear first... that way you don't dump a bunch of money on the IFS.. IF crawling is what you like then I see a SAS in you future.

if you only do one end then do the rear. I regeared at the same time i put in the lockers so it made sense to me to put both front and rear in while i had them out.

I wanna see what setup he is running up front for such a low lift and a solid axle.

Waggy 44.

Yep thats why i added stuff to my truck. Im getting happy where its at now. If I want to do things too much harder im going to have to cut the ifs off, not because it wheels bad, just because of cv issues with lockers.

What size tires are you running now? 35s?

Question: which end?

Here we go again! :surfer:

if you only do one end then do the rear.

For these trucks, I agree. Now if it was a Jeep...

I agree with the others... do the rear locker first. Most of the time when you need a locker is when you're climbing up stuff.. and since that shifts the majority of the weight to the rear of the truck, it just makes sense that a rear locker will get used more.

x2 on what Outdoorlogic said.. you'll save a lot of money if you do gears and lockers at the same time because the labor is the same.

OK, so now I'm putting it all together, I'll do some research on gears, but I wouldn't mind a quick tutorial

Did some reading on re-gearing, brian2sun, saw a post where you said you wished you'd gone with 5.29 instead of 4.88, since you've added so much weight, I'm going to add a cbi rear bumper so I'm headed there, you still think that's the way to go, thinking about having Inchworm put the diff together for me

check east coast gear supply, i think they have about the best setup prices. They ship to your front door.

Yeah, not being supercharged, 5.29s would be better with a lot of extra weight IMO. I'm probably going to get a SC someday so at that point the 4.88s will be fine, but I feel a little laggy with my setup right now. I think the 4.88s made up for my bigger tires and steel wheels, but not the armor weight.
